πŸ… Morning Hustle β˜• Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. The Olympic hockey final we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. After 12 years without NHL players at the Games, the sport’s two greatest rivals are about to settle things on Sunday for all the marbles. Grab your coffee and settle in. This one’s going to be good.

πŸ† Top Story: USA vs. Canada for Olympic Gold β€” The Dream Final Is Set

It’s happening.

The United States and Canada will meet Sunday for Olympic men’s hockey gold in the first NHL-participated tournament in 12 years, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Canada is going for three straight Olympic championships with NHL participation. The Americans have been waiting since the Miracle on Ice in 1980 to leave an Olympics golden again. Both teams earned their spots the hard way Friday night, but in very different fashion.

Canada nearly gave their fans collective heart failure. Down 2-0 to Finland and playing without injured captain Sidney Crosby, the Canadians clawed back with three unanswered goals, the last coming from Nathan MacKinnon with just 35.2 seconds remaining in regulation for a 3-2 victory. It was their second straight elimination game decided by the thinnest of margins.

The Americans, meanwhile, made Slovakia look overmatched. Jack Hughes and Jack Eichel scored 19 seconds apart in the second period to blow the game open in a 6-2 cruise that felt more like a coronation march than a semifinal. Team USA is guaranteed at least silver, which marks their first men’s hockey medal in 16 years.

Now comes the main event.

Matthew Tkachuk put it perfectly: “Best on best. This is the pinnacle of the sport. There will be not one TV without this game on in the United States and in Canada.”

Quinn Hughes, who’ll face his homeland on the biggest stage, was philosophical about it: “If we played them in a best-of-seven, it probably goes seven. So it’s just going to be whoever’s better on that day.”

Jack Eichel sees redemption. The Americans lost to Canada in last year’s 4 Nations final, a tight game that came down to one or two plays. “It’s a great opportunity for us,” Eichel said. “They end up making the extra play, and they’re the champions of that tournament. So it’s a great opportunity for us to go win this one.”

Dylan Larkin called it “a battle of the ages.” He’s not wrong.

One country gets to stand on top of the podium. The other goes home with silver and a what-if that’ll haunt them for four years. Sunday can’t get here fast enough.

⚑ Quick Hits

πŸ€• Will Sidney Crosby Play in the Gold Medal Game? β€” Canada’s captain left the quarterfinal against Czechia with a leg injury from a Radko Gudas hit and hasn’t played since. His status for Sunday’s final remains uncertain. Before he left that game, Crosby addressed his teammates at intermission: “Go get it, boys.” They did, winning in OT without him, then beating Finland in the semis. Now the question is whether the 39-year-old can suit up for what could be his final Olympic game.

βš–οΈ Did Brad Marchand Get Away with Goalie Interference? β€” Canada’s second goal against Finland is sparking controversy. Brad Marchand fell into Finnish goalie Juuse Saros in the crease, knocking him over just before Shea Theodore’s tying goal. Saros had to scramble back to his feet as the rebound was sent to Theodore for the one-timer. Finland didn’t challenge for goalie interference. Marchand said he “got shoved into him” and tried to get out. Saros? “Obviously he’s laying top of me, so that’s why I can’t get up. But yeah, it is what it is.”

⛸️ Alex Ferreira Completes Olympic Medal Collection β€” The 31-year-old American freeskier won halfpipe gold at Milano Cortina on Friday with a third-run score of 93.75 points, adding to his silver from 2018 and bronze from 2022. Three Olympics, three medals, three different colors. Mission accomplished.

🎿 Hunter Hess Fires Back at Trump β€” After Donald Trump called him a “real loser” for admitting he had mixed feelings about representing the U.S., American freeskier Hunter Hess had the last word Friday. As he swooped down the halfpipe, Hess flashed an L-sign with his hand and later said his row with Trump was something “I definitely wear with pride.” Hess called it “the hardest weeks of my life.”

😱 Polish Speed Skater Hospitalized After Blade Slices Face β€” Kamila Sellier was immobilized on a stretcher and wheeled out of the Milano Ice Skating Arena Friday night after a competitor’s blade sliced her above her left eye during the women’s 1500m quarter-finals. She was given stitches at the arena before being transported to hospital. American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the accident.

🎿 Eileen Gu Claps Back at JD Vance β€” After vice president JD Vance criticized the San Francisco-born freeskier for representing China instead of the U.S., the 22-year-old Gu responded: “Flattered. Thanks, JD!” The most decorated female freeskier in Olympic history (five medals) has one more medal event Saturday in the halfpipe.

🏎️ Charles Leclerc Tops Final F1 Pre-Season Test β€” Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc clocked the quickest time in Bahrain at the final Formula One test before the season begins in Australia in two weeks. He was eight-tenths clear of Lando Norris and a full second ahead of Max Verstappen. Aston Martin, meanwhile, endured a horror show, completing just six laps.

⚽ German Club Cancels US Trip Over ICE Concerns β€” Werder Bremen scrapped plans to visit Minnesota and Detroit in May for friendly matches, citing concerns over unrest after ICE actions in Minnesota, economic risks, and U.S. visa restrictions. The top-flight German club had not confirmed opponents for the planned matches.

🍁 North of the Border

Canada’s athletes delivered drama on the ice and movement off it.

MacKinnon’s Heroics Send Canada to Gold Medal Game β€” Nathan MacKinnon scored with 35.2 seconds left to beat Finland 3-2 in the semifinals, sending Canada to Sunday’s gold medal game against the USA. Playing without captain Sidney Crosby, the Canadians fell behind 2-0 before battling back with three unanswered goals. It’s their second straight elimination game decided by the thinnest of margins. Now they face the Americans for all the marbles in the first NHL-participated Olympic final in 12 years.

The Goalie Interference Question No One Challenged β€” Brad Marchand’s contact with Finnish goalie Juuse Saros on Canada’s tying goal is raising eyebrows. Marchand fell into Saros in the crease, knocking the goalie over just before Shea Theodore’s goal tied the game 2-2. Finland didn’t challenge the play, but replays show Saros struggling to get back to his feet. Under IIHF rules, the question is whether Marchand deliberately made contact and whether Saros’ ability to defend was impeded. Marchand says he got shoved. Saros says Marchand was laying on top of him. The goal stood. Canada won. The controversy lingers.

Blue Jays Getting Serious About Max Scherzer Reunion β€” Toronto’s discussions with the 41-year-old three-time Cy Young winner have gotten more serious in the last week, with the Blue Jays appearing to be his most serious pursuer. The sides are discussing a one-year deal that would bring back the fiery competitor who helped Toronto reach the World Series in 2025. If signed, the Jays would be patient, possibly ramping Scherzer up gradually with a view toward late April or May. He posted a 5.19 ERA in 17 regular-season starts last year but excelled in October, including a memorable Game 4 ALCS start where he yelled at manager John Schneider on his way to 5.2 innings of work.

Spring Training Begins Saturday with Plenty to Watch β€” The Blue Jays open Grapefruit League play against Philadelphia with several storylines to track. Yimi Garcia will miss opening day after September elbow surgery. The team needs to finalize how to deploy new pieces Kazuma Okamoto and Jesus Sanchez. Jose Berrios will be closely watched after finishing last season on the IL with elbow inflammation. Andres Gimenez, moved from second base to shortstop to replace Bo Bichette, ran the table at the position in September and the playoffs. Manager John Schneider: “The skills are the skills. I’ll put him up against anyone at shortstop.”

Dominique Rhymes Retires After Eight CFL Seasons β€” The 32-year-old receiver announced his retirement after 110 games with Ottawa, B.C., and Calgary. Over his career, Rhymes caught 372 passes for 5,822 yards and 32 touchdowns. His best season came in 2022 with the Lions when he made 85 receptions for 1,401 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning All-CFL honors. “Football was the dream of a lifetime. Thank you, CFL, for everything,” Rhymes wrote.

B.C. Lions Stand Pat, Questions Remain β€” The Lions made minimal moves in CFL free agency, signing just three players with experience and none who seem like roster locks. GM Ryan Rigmaiden re-signed 18 pending free agents and added defensive tackle Casey Sayles and linebacker Darnell Sankey, but failed to address key weaknesses. The biggest concern? No reliable backup quarterback behind injury-prone Nathan Rourke after losing negotiations with Tre Ford and Dustin Crum. Chase Brice, who wasn’t trusted over Jeremiah Masoli last season, is the only other QB with CFL experience. The Lions also lost All-CFL left tackle Jarell Broxton to Winnipeg and haven’t solved secondary issues after losing top prospect Robert Carter Jr. to the NFL. Same Lions, same problems.

πŸ’ͺ Hustle & Heart Highlight

Dominique Rhymes walked away from football the same way he played it: with honesty, gratitude, and a whole lot of heart. After eight seasons, nearly six thousand yards, and a career built on resilience across three CFL cities, he called the sport β€œthe dream of a lifetime.”

Not everyone gets to leave the game on their own terms. Rhymes did, and he leaves behind a legacy of work ethic and quiet excellence.
