Morning Hustle : Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. The Olympic hangover is officially over and hockey is back in full swing. Connor McDavid is doing Connor McDavid things, an 18-year-old is rewriting the record books, and somewhere in Toronto, the Maple Leafs are trying to figure out what “urgency” means. Let’s dive in.

🏆 Top Story

Connor McDavid Joins Gretzky and Lemieux in Exclusive 100-Point Club

Connor McDavid reached the 100-point plateau Thursday night, becoming just the third player in NHL history to record nine 100-point seasons.

The only two players ahead of him? Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. That’s it. That’s the list.

McDavid hit the milestone in 60 games with a two-point performance against Los Angeles, marking the fourth time in his career he’s reached 100 points in 60 games or fewer. It would have been his 10th straight 100-point season if not for the 97 points he posted in the COVID-shortened 64-game campaign in 2019-20.

Here’s the thing that makes McDavid’s achievement even more remarkable: he’s showing no signs of slowing down. He logged 20:05 of ice time against the Kings after playing 22:02 the night before in Anaheim. Fresh off winning Olympic tournament MVP, most players would be coasting. McDavid is accelerating.

“We haven’t afforded ourselves the luxury of having the ability to take nights off,” teammate Zach Hyman said. “He loves hockey. He wants to play all the time.”

The Oilers needed every minute of McDavid’s brilliance as they snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-1 demolition of the Kings, their largest road win since 2009. Seven different Oilers scored, and the victory put Edmonton six points ahead of a flailing Los Angeles team that was booed off the ice at the final buzzer.

McDavid is on pace for another season that will be remembered long after he hangs up his skates. And when you’re mentioned in the same breath as Gretzky and Lemieux, you’re doing something right.

⚡ Quick Hits

18-Year-Old Matthew Schaefer Makes NHL History

New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer became the first 18-year-old defenseman in NHL history to reach 18 goals in a season, scoring twice in 55 seconds to erase a two-goal Montreal deficit.

He now has 18 goals, 23 assists, and is averaging 24:05 of ice time per game. Only 17 other players in the NHL average more ice time, and all of them are at least three years older.

“He’s a special player,” said Islanders GM Mathieu Darche. “There’s special, and then there’s special.” The kid has 23 more games to pad his lead on a record that didn’t exist until Thursday night.

Bodø/Glimt’s Miracle Run Continues

Norwegian minnows Bodø/Glimt defeated Inter Milan 2-1 at San Siro to advance to the Champions League’s last 16, completing a 4-3 aggregate triumph over the runaway Serie A leaders.

Even Inter coach Cristian Chivu acknowledged after the match that the Norwegian team had been too good. Despite Inter dominating early and missing star Lautaro Martínez, they couldn’t find a way through Bodø/Glimt’s high-quality, high-speed attacking. The fairytale continues.

Brady Tkachuk Condemns White House AI Video

Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk said he does not appreciate an AI video released by the White House showing him insulting Canadians after Team USA’s Olympic gold medal victory.

The fabricated video showed Tkachuk saying: “They booed our national anthem, so I had to come out and teach those maple syrup eating fuckers a lesson.”

Tkachuk, who scored five points in six Olympic games, expressed regret over the video that misrepresented his views. Politics and sports, still not playing nicely together.

World Cup Funding Stuck in Government Shutdown

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Thursday that “no funds have been awarded yet” from the $625 million in grants authorized for World Cup host cities.

The funds, held up by the ongoing partial government shutdown, were set to be distributed for security and planning. The tournament is just over 100 days away, and host city officials are concerned they won’t have time to prepare. Representative Nellie Pou said it’s “time for DHS to do its job.”

Italian Golfer Survives Three-Floor Fall Down Lift Shaft

Andrea Pavan is “thankful to be alive” after reportedly falling three floors down a lift shaft in South Africa. The 36-year-old Italian golfer, a two-time European Tour winner, was forced to withdraw from this week’s South African Open Championship after the incident Wednesday. According to his former coach, Pavan is “in good spirits.” That’s one way to miss a tournament.

🍁 North of the Border

Canadian hockey had a night of extremes, from record-breaking performances to complete meltdowns.

Oilers Snap Four-Game Skid with 8-1 Demolition

Edmonton bounced back from a brutal stretch with an 8-1 blowout of Los Angeles, their largest road win since 2009. Seven different Oilers scored as Connor Ingram made 21 saves, allowing only one goal.

The win came 24 hours after Edmonton pulled Tristan Jarry in a 6-5 loss to Anaheim, and the goaltending battle is heating up. Ingram now has a 2.58 GAA and .899 save percentage compared to Jarry’s disastrous 3.85 and .864.

“If you defend well and the goaltender makes the saves he needs to make, you’re not going to let in too many goals,” said Zach Hyman. The Oilers are now six points ahead of the Kings, who were booed off the ice at the final buzzer.

Maple Leafs in Free Fall After Back-to-Back Beatdowns

Toronto’s slide is turning into a full‑blown collapse. One night after a 4–2 loss to Tampa Bay pushed them toward seller territory, the Leafs followed it with an even uglier 5–1 defeat to Florida. The Panthers scored three times in the first period, outshooting Toronto 16–6 and exposing the same lack of urgency that doomed them 24 hours earlier.

Asked why the team started so slowly with their season on the line, Auston Matthews could only say: “I don’t know.” John Tavares echoed him: “It’s a good question. Obviously, it’s a critical time of year. I don’t know.”

The Leafs are now on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade. When both your captain and alternate captain can’t explain what’s wrong, the problem runs deeper than a bad week.

Dustin Wolf Steals Spotlight in Hometown San Jose

Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf made 34 saves in a 4–1 win over the Sharks, silencing the sold‑out crowd that came to celebrate Olympic star Macklin Celebrini’s homecoming.

Wolf, who grew up watching the Sharks and famously kicked in his mother’s belly whenever they attended games during her pregnancy, owned the building that once stirred him before he was even born.

Celebrini, who led all Olympic scorers with five goals, had nine shot attempts but couldn’t beat Wolf.

“Anytime you get to come close to home is awesome,” Wolf said. “I always find myself looking up to where I used to sit as a season‑ticket holder.”

Max Scherzer Creates Blue Jays Pitching Meritocracy

Max Scherzer’s $3 million deal with $10 million in incentives means Toronto now has seven rotation candidates competing for five spots. Manager John Schneider made clear that Scherzer won’t be guaranteed a spot despite his three Cy Young Awards. “Their play, their performance dictates it, and everyone’s a big boy,” Schneider said.

The 41-year-old has been throwing bullpen and live BP sessions and could debut weeks into the season. The rotation currently includes Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, José Berríos, and Cody Ponce, with Shane Bieber on the injured list.

May the best arm win.

Darnell Sankey Questions What More He Could Have Done

Two-time CFL all-star middle linebacker Darnell Sankey was released by the Montreal Alouettes in December despite leading the defense to two Grey Cup appearances. “I just kind of felt like when you lead a defence to two Grey Cups, I don’t really know what else (you can do),” Sankey said.

The 31-year-old signed with the B.C. Lions eight days later, with GM Ryan Rigmaiden calling within minutes of the news. Sankey made 99 tackles and two sacks in 2025 and was an East Division All-CFL selection. He faces his former team for the first time on September 4 in Montreal.

Tkachuk and Sanderson Bring Gold Home to Ottawa

For the first time in two decades, two Ottawa Senators are returning from an Olympics with gold medals. Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson won with Team USA in Milan, the first two Senators to achieve the feat since Daniel Alfredsson won gold for Sweden in 2006.

Sanderson tallied two assists while Tkachuk amassed five points in six games. Their achievement is especially meaningful as Brady and Matthew’s father Keith was a silver medalist in 2002. The sons got the gold their father never could.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Connor McDavid logged 22:02 of ice time in Anaheim on Wednesday night. Less than 24 hours later, he played 20:05 against the Kings. He just won Olympic tournament MVP. He just hit 100 points for the ninth time in his career, joining Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux as the only players to ever do it.

And he didn’t want a night off.

“We haven’t afforded ourselves the luxury of having the ability to take nights off,” Zach Hyman said. “He loves hockey. He wants to play all the time. You weren’t going to be able to hold him out of that game.”

That’s what greatness looks like. Not the points. Not the records. Not the company he keeps with Gretzky and Lemieux.

It’s the refusal to coast. The unwillingness to take a breather when your body is screaming for one. The hunger that never gets satisfied, no matter how many milestones you pass.

Connor McDavid is chasing history, and history can’t keep up.

👊 Sign-Off

The NHL is back in full force, teenagers are breaking records, and somewhere in Norway, a team that shouldn’t be here is still dancing in the Champions League.

This is why we watch. For the moments that don’t make sense until they happen.

Go make your Friday count.
