“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. Sports gave us tragedy and triumph this weekend, moments measured in inches and losses that can never be measured at all. From a college quarterback gone too soon to a closer still haunted by one slider, today’s newsletter is a reminder that the games we love exist in the real world. Let’s get into it.

🏆 Top Story: Colorado Quarterback Dominiq Ponder Dies at 23 in Car Crash

The sports world is mourning the loss of Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder, who died early Sunday morning in a single-car crash in Boulder County.

The 23-year-old lost control of his Tesla on a curve, hit a guardrail, struck an electrical line pole, and rolled down an embankment before the car caught fire. Ponder was pronounced dead at the scene. The Colorado State Patrol said a preliminary investigation “shows that speed is suspected as a factor.”

Coach Deion Sanders, who brought Ponder to Colorado and believed in his potential, mourned the loss of “one of my favorites.”

There’s no way to make sense of a loss like this. No silver lining. No lesson that makes it easier. Just a young man with his whole life ahead of him, gone in an instant.

The Colorado football family is in mourning. Our thoughts are with Ponder’s family, his teammates, and everyone who knew him.

⚡ Quick Hits

Arsenal Equals Premier League Set-Piece Record

Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2-1 with both goals coming from corner kicks, equaling the Premier League record for most goals scored from corners in a season with 16. And there are still nine games to go. Gabriel bullied Reece James to set up William Saliba for the opener, and Jurriën Timber punished goalkeeper Robert Sánchez for the second. Chelsea has now conceded seven goals from set pieces in Liam Rosenior’s first 13 games. Mikel Arteta’s side keeps finding ways to win, even when open play isn’t clicking.

Boston Common Wins TGL Match by Four Inches

Boston Common Golf defeated Jupiter Links GC 7-6 in overtime to clinch the No. 1 seed in the TGL playoffs, completing a worst-to-first turnaround after not registering a single win in the league’s first season. The match came down to Hideki Matsuyama versus Max Homa in overtime, with Matsuyama’s pitch landing at 10 feet, 4 inches and Homa’s at 10 feet, 8 inches. Four inches separated first place from heartbreak. Rory McIlroy hit one of the shots of the year, hooking a ball around “Stinger’s” hanging rock from more than 240 yards to seven feet. Max Homa and Tom Kim made history by playing a full PGA Tour round and then a full TGL match on the same day.

US Half Marathon Championship Ends in Chaos

The US Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta ended in disaster when the guide vehicle took the top three women runners off course with less than two miles to go. Jess McClain, who had a significant lead, fell from first to ninth. Molly Born, who had been more than a minute behind, won the race. USA Track & Field has denied an appeal. McClain, Emma Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat finished in ninth, 12th, and 13th respectively, around two minutes behind Born. Imagine training for months, leading a national championship, and losing because someone took a wrong turn.

FIFA’s Infantino Proposes Red Cards for Players Covering Mouths

FIFA president Gianni Infantino suggested players who cover their mouths while addressing opponents could be sent off as part of the governing body’s battle against racism. The practice has been in focus after Vinícius Júnior’s allegations of discriminatory abuse by Gianluca Prestianni. The Benfica player was suspended for his Champions League playoff second leg against Real Madrid pending investigation. The proposed “Vinícius Law” could be fast-tracked for this summer’s World Cup.

Iran Unsure if National Team Can Play World Cup in US

The president of Iran’s football federation says he does not know if the national team can play World Cup matches in the US after the US and Israeli bombardment of the country. “What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Mehdi Taj said as Iran traded strikes with Israel. The tournament is supposed to be about football. Sometimes the world has other plans.

Tottenham’s Tudor Says Team Lacking “Attack, Midfield, Defence and Brain”

Tottenham manager Igor Tudor didn’t hold back after a 2-1 defeat at Fulham, their fourth straight league loss, left them four points above the relegation zone. “We are lacking when we attack, we lack the quality to score the goal. We are lacking in the middle to run and we are lacking behind to stay there to suffer and not concede the goal. So, an amazing situation,” Tudor said. When your manager lists every third of the field as a problem, you’re in trouble.

Pep Guardiola Condemns Fans Who Booed Players Breaking Ramadan Fast

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola called on football supporters to “respect religion and diversity” after fans audibly jeered when play was halted in the 13th minute at Elland Road to allow Muslim players to break their Ramadan fast. Despite a clear message on the big screen during City’s 1-0 win against Leeds, a section of fans booed. The Leeds coach called it “disappointing” and said “we need to do better.” Antoine Semenyo scored his 14th goal of the season for City in the victory.

Canadian sports had a busy weekend with World Cup news, contract extensions, and one closer still haunted by Game 7.

Gary Bettman Visiting Calgary for Potential 2028 World Cup Venue

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is coming to Calgary on Monday for a site visit of Scotia Place, the $1.2 billion event center slated to open in fall 2027. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said venue announcements for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey are two weeks away. Calgary is on the short list to host four nations in round-robin play for the February 2028 tournament.

The city’s pitch includes a festival-style atmosphere built around concerts, fan events, and community celebrations. With Donald Trump’s threats creating uncertainty around US bids, Calgary offers stability, enthusiasm, and a proven volunteer base from hosting the 1988 Olympics.

Imagine Matthew Tkachuk returning to Calgary wearing Team USA colors as Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and company try to avenge the overtime loss in last month’s Olympic gold medal game.

Oilers Waive Mangiapane as Defensive Issues Persist

The Edmonton Oilers waived forward Andrew Mangiapane on Sunday as the team continues to struggle defensively ahead of the trade deadline. Despite scoring 44 goals in their past 10 games (most in the NHL), the Oilers have allowed 46 and hold a 4-6 record. Defenseman Darnell Nurse, who plays nearly 21 minutes per game and carries a $9.25 million cap hit, has a 39 percent goals-for differential since Christmas, worst among Edmonton’s top forwards and defensemen. Connor McDavid’s top line has a goals-for share of barely over 50 percent at five-on-five despite producing 73 points since Christmas. GM Stan Bowman can add all he wants at the deadline, but if the core pieces don’t cover their defensive responsibilities, it won’t matter.

Jeff Hoffman Vows Stronger Return After Game 7 Heartbreak

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman is still haunted by the slider that Miguel Rojas hooked for a game-tying homer in World Series Game 7. “I cost everybody in here a World Series ring,” he said after the gutting 5-4, 11-inning loss. Replays of the moment followed him “everywhere” over winter. Hoffman led the majors with 59 games finished and placed fourth with 33 saves in his first season as closer, but also blew seven saves and gave up 15 home runs. He’s been told he’ll have the closer role again and plans to scale back fastball usage after 10 of his 15 homers came against the heater. “That season will teach me a lot moving forward and I’ll be a better pitcher for us this year,” Hoffman said.

Trey Yesavage Embraces Blue Jays’ Workload Management

Toronto pitcher Trey Yesavage is embracing a deliberate approach to his spring workload after logging 139.2 total innings in 2025, including 27.2 in the postseason. The 22-year-old has yet to appear in a spring game with no immediate plans for his debut. “They’re taking me slow, slower than anyone else in here,” Yesavage said. “I know they have my best interests in mind.” Manager John Schneider said the Blue Jays won’t ask him to pitch 200 regular-season innings, potentially easing him into the season so he has fewer restrictions down the stretch and into the playoffs. Smart teams protect their young arms. The Blue Jays are being smart.

Nathan Rourke’s CFL Contract Extension Details Revealed

B.C. Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke earned a two-year extension after producing an MVP and Most Outstanding Canadian season in 2025, completing 70.4 percent of passes for 5,290 yards with 31 touchdowns. The 27-year-old Victoria native is scheduled to earn $684,700 in hard money for 2026, $699,700 for 2027, and $704,700 for 2028. That’s a significant spike from his $71,500 rookie contract in 2022. When you complete nearly 80 percent of your passes and win MVP, you get paid.

Ducks Edge Flames 3-2 in Shootout

Cutter Gauthier scored twice in regulation as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 in a shootout, extending their home win streak to eight games. Mason McTavish slid the puck through Devin Cooley’s legs for the shootout winner. The Ducks improved to 14-3 in games that go to overtime. Coach Joel Quenneville, who last week joined Scotty Bowman as the only NHL coaches to win 1,000 games, was honored during a pregame ceremony.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Jeff Hoffman could have asked for a different role. He could have pointed to the seven blown saves, the 15 home runs allowed, the one slider that cost the Blue Jays a World Series ring, and said: “Give this job to someone else.”

Instead, he wants the ball again.

“I loved being a closer,” Hoffman said. “Obviously the good times are the highest of highs, and the bad times are lowest of the lows. That season will teach me a lot moving forward and I’ll be a better pitcher for us this year.”

The replays of Miguel Rojas’ homer followed him everywhere over winter. He blamed himself. He carried it with him. And now he’s using it as fuel.

“In a perfect world, I would have loved to go out and had my best year as a Blue Jay in Year 1 and really excelled. It didn’t happen that way. Went through some growing pains. But I’m a learner and I’m super-competitive and I’m looking forward to get another crack at it.”

That’s what we honor here. Not the perfect season. Not the flawless performance. The willingness to face failure, learn from it, and come back stronger.

Jeff Hoffman wants the ninth inning again. That takes guts.

👊 Sign-Off

Sports gave us heartbreak this weekend. The kind you can’t fix with a better game plan or a smarter trade. The kind that reminds us these athletes are people first, and the games we love exist in a world that doesn’t always make sense.

Hug the people you love. Tell them what they mean to you. And remember that every day we get to watch these games is a gift.

Go make your Monday count.
