Morning Hustle : Your Daily Sports Fix
“Honouring hustle and heart.”
Good morning. Venezuela is headed to the World Baseball Classic final after a comeback for the ages. Alberta just landed one of hockey’s biggest events. And Tony Powell’s story reminds us why being true to yourself matters more than any trophy. Let’s dive in.
🏆 Top Story: Venezuela Rallies to Reach First-Ever WBC Final
Sometimes the best stories are the ones nobody saw coming.
Venezuela overcame a 2-0 fourth-inning deficit on Monday night to beat Italy 4-2 and advance to its first-ever World Baseball Classic championship game. Ronald Acuña Jr., Maikel Garcia, and Luis Arraez delivered run-scoring, two-out singles in a seventh-inning rally that broke the game open in front of a pro-Venezuelan sellout crowd at loanDepot park.
Italy, the first European nation to reach a WBC semifinal, had been the tournament’s feel-good story. They were 5-0 and had captured hearts with an espresso-sipping ritual after home runs and victory celebrations featuring Italian wine. But a team with three Italy-born players, a handful of major leaguers, and many from the minors couldn’t hold a late-inning lead against a batting order featuring three straight RBIs from all-stars.
Venezuela reached the final for the first time after losing to South Korea in its only previous semifinal appearance in 2009. They’ll meet the United States for the title on Tuesday night. A coin toss was held earlier Monday to determine the home team, and the U.S. won.
The stage is set. The underdogs have arrived. And Tuesday night is going to be electric.

Chiefs Trade for Jets QB Justin Fields
The New York Jets have reportedly agreed to send quarterback Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup for the injured Patrick Mahomes. The Jets will receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2027 and pick up $7 million of his guaranteed $10 million salary. The deal is pending a physical. Fields went 2-7 as the Jets’ starter with seven touchdowns and one interception for 1,259 yards. He threw for fewer than 55 yards in four games, including a season-low 27 against Buffalo.
Pep Guardiola: Man City Need ‘Perfect Game’ to Overcome Real Madrid
Pep Guardiola admitted Manchester City require a “perfect game” to overturn Real Madrid’s 3-0 lead in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday. Federico Valverde’s first-half hat-trick at the Bernabéu has City on the brink of elimination. Guardiola noted how “in the past always we found the way to win this kind of game” but this season has been different. He muttered about the “unfairness” that his side hasn’t gotten the results he feels their football has deserved.
Iran Negotiating to Move World Cup Games to Mexico
Iran’s football federation is in discussions with FIFA about moving the team’s World Cup matches to Mexico from the United States owing to safety concerns. Iran are due to play all three group games in the U.S. Donald Trump said last week that Iran were welcome but suggested it may not be appropriate “for their own life and safety.” Iran’s participation was thrown into doubt after the U.S. launched joint airstrikes at the country with Israel.
MLS Suspends Philadelphia Union Executive
Major League Soccer suspended Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner without pay through June 1, 2026. Tanner had been under investigation since mid-November following allegations of misconduct. “Based on new information obtained during outside counsel’s independent review, the investigation substantiated violations of MLS policies and standards of professional conduct required of League and Club leadership,” the league said.
Chelsea Breached Premier League Rules with £47M in Off-Book Payments
The Premier League’s judgment against Chelsea concludes the club engaged in “deception and concealment.” The breaches, more than 30 of them, relate to at least £47 million in off-book payments linked to deals for Eden Hazard, Willian, David Luiz, and Nemanja Matic during the Roman Abramovich era. Experts believe the club would be lucky to escape with a fine and suspended transfer ban, but further penalties may follow.
Daniil Medvedev Upsets Alcaraz at Indian Wells
Daniil Medvedev produced one of the best matches of his career to upset Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells, ending the Spaniard’s 16-match winning streak. Few gave Medvedev a chance against Alcaraz, who had won their four previous meetings. The veteran made a statement early, chasing down a drop shot and lob before slamming an ultra-flat backhand winner. This was “the most startling performance of the year so far” and a timely challenge to the big two era of Sinner and Alcaraz.
Robert MacIntyre: ‘I’m Not the Brightest But I Know How to Play Golf’
Robert MacIntyre’s run at the Players Championship proved he’s one of the UK’s most unheralded elite sportsmen. The 29-year-old Scot has evolved from the shinty-loving boy from Oban to a golfer who feels at home on the biggest stages. Next up: the Masters. When asked to compare his approach with Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick, MacIntyre smiled: “I’m less analytical. I’m not the brightest guy but I know how to play golf, just shape balls.”

Calgary and Edmonton to Host 2028 World Cup of Hockey
Alberta will host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey in a joint bid that’s projected to generate $375 million in revenue, create 43,000 jobs, and fill 172,000 hotel nights.
Calgary will host seven games (six from a four-team round robin plus one elimination game) while Edmonton gets three games (the two semifinals and the final). The NHL made the final call, choosing Edmonton for the final to give Connor McDavid a shot at winning a title in his own rink.
The federal government contributed $8 million to the bid, the province added $15 million. Calgary’s new $1.2-billion Scotia Place arena will open in fall 2027 and host the World Cup less than six months later.
“The NHL and the NHLPA drove the game structure, probably because they knew this would be a difficult thing for us to sort out,” Flames president Robert Hayes said about the Calgary-Edmonton rivalry.
Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Locked In After WBC Performance
The Toronto Blue Jays are thrilled with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s World Baseball Classic performance. Over five contests, he clubbed two homers and three doubles while not striking out in 18 at-bats. His .944 slugging percentage was higher than Junior Caminero, Fernando Tatis, and Juan Soto. His 116.1 mph double off Team USA starter Paul Skenes in Sunday’s semifinal was the hardest-hit ball the star right-hander had allowed in his major-league career. “Excited to see Vladdy put it together for a full season,” said one Toronto player. “If he can do that, he’s the MVP.” Guerrero Jr. turned 27 on Monday.
RJ Barrett’s Defense Key to Raptors’ Resurgence
RJ Barrett has been standing out for his defensive contributions during the Raptors’ recent resurgence, a new dimension to his game. Over the past 10 games, he’s averaged 22 points and 6.1 rebounds on 55.8% shooting, including 38% from three. Against Phoenix, he took several turns against Devin Booker late in the fourth quarter, finishing with a crucial steal. Against Detroit, he drew a charge on Cade Cunningham. “There is absolutely nothing that’s preventing him from being elite two-way player,” coach Darko Rajakovic said. “Lately he’s doing it in much longer periods of time, and that’s really helping the team to win.”
Greg Bell Becomes CFL’s Highest-Paid American Running Back
East Division all-star Greg Bell thought he was staying in Hamilton, but the Ottawa Redblacks had other plans. Ottawa made Bell the highest-paid American running back in the CFL at $175,000 in hard money for 2026, including a $50,000 signing bonus. Bell led all CFL runners with 62 receptions last season while dominating as a rusher. “When I got to Hamilton, we were last place. So it could turn around quick, I believe we could turn it around,” Bell said about joining the 4-14 Redblacks.
Vancouver Whitecaps Perfect Through Four, Crush Minnesota 6-0
The Vancouver Whitecaps remain one of only two teams in MLS with a perfect record, equalling their best start to a season with four consecutive wins. The 6-0 destruction of Minnesota on Sunday marked their third clean sheet. Brian White recorded a brace and Sebastian Berhalter had a goal and two assists. The team’s depth was on full display as German midfielder Sebastian Schonlau made his debut off the bench, while Senegalese winger Cheikh Sabaly bagged his first goal. The victory came after suffering a 3-0 home loss to Seattle in mid-week Concacaf Champions League play.
Toronto FC Concedes Last-Minute Goal in Home Opener
Toronto FC was seconds away from an impressive win in the home opener of its 20th MLS season before conceding with the last kick of the game in a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls. Dániel Sallói gave the hosts the lead before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalized in the 98th minute. “This didn’t feel like we were as energetic as we needed to be from the very beginning,” coach Robin Fraser said. “When they are really at it, we can compete with anyone. We have to really be at it.”
💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight
Tony Powell spent decades hiding who he really was.
The former Norwich defender lived for years in an LA motel and cut ties with his family for more than three decades. He was a husband, father of two young daughters, and Norwich’s player of the season in 1979. But he was also secretly gay in an era when coming out would have meant losing everything.
“I hated it,” Powell says now, at 78. “I just wanted to be who I am, but at that time it was not a good idea to come out.”
Powell is not a demonstrative man and, having been forced to bury his true self for decades, does not make a fuss about the pain he endured. But there is an ache in his English accent, which remains intact after 45 years in America.
His story is now the subject of a documentary. And while it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, it’s also a reminder of how much courage it takes to live authentically when the world tells you not to.
Tony Powell played professional football at the highest level. He won Player of the Season. He had a family and a career.
But none of it mattered because he couldn’t be himself.
That’s the cost of hiding. That’s what we honor when we celebrate athletes who have the courage to live their truth. Because being who you are, especially when the world makes it hard, takes more heart than any trophy ever could.
