Bethel-Thompson’s Fire, Leonard’s Lock-In, and the Argonauts’ Impossible Win

Honouring Hustle and Heart

Tuesday gave us a little bit of everything: a quarterback controversy brewing in the nation’s capital, a superstar locking in his future in Toronto, and a CFL record that defies all logic. Let’s get into it.

Top Story

The Argonauts Win With Almost No Football

How do you win a football game without the football? The Toronto Argonauts figured it out on Saturday, and in doing so, they set a record that might never be broken. In their 24-19 win over the Edmonton Elks, the Double Blue possessed the ball for a grand total of 21:15. According to CFL statistician Steve Daniel, that’s the least ever recorded by a winning team since official data began in 1994. The previous record was 23:02, set by the B.C. Lions in 2025.

But the absurdity doesn’t stop there. Toronto rushed for minus-one yard on the day. That’s not a typo. Isaiah Smith had three carries for minus-eight yards, Qualan Jones had two for one, and Chad Kelly scrambled once for six. Combined, six carries for minus-one yard. Daniel confirmed this is just the second time in modern CFL history a team has rushed for negative yardage in a victory, the first being the Birmingham Barracudas in 1995. The Boatmen are the first non-American team to pull off this bizarre feat.

So how did they win? Big plays. Chad Kelly completed passes of 48-plus yards to Tyler Kahmann, Kevin Mital, David Ungerer III, and Dymere Miller. The defence gave up 483 yards and 30 first downs but stiffened when it mattered, picking off Cody Fajardo twice in the end zone. It’s a feisty, ugly, record-setting win, and it clinched a home playoff game. Sometimes the hustle is all about making the most of the few chances you get.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart could miss the rest of the NFL season after testing revealed his knee injury is worse than initially anticipated. He was hurt in Monday night’s loss to the Rams.

Crew Sack Higuain

The Columbus Crew have sacked reserve team coach Federico Higuaín after he allegedly grabbed a female referee’s hand and told her “don’t forget this is a man’s game.” The referees’ union has criticised the initial two-match ban.

North of the Border

Leonard Stays in Toronto

The Raptors and Kawhi Leonard have agreed to a two-year, $115 million extension, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season. The deal solidifies the team’s championship window and keeps the superstar in town for the foreseeable future. It’s a bold commitment from both sides.

Lankinen and Cootes Shine for Canucks

Under immense pressure with Thatcher Demko sidelined, Kevin Lankinen delivered an encouraging performance on Tuesday. Iain MacIntyre notes that Lankinen, demanding a bounce-back season from himself after a subpar campaign, has some positivity to build upon. Max Cootes also impressed in the Canucks’ pre-season tilt.

Bobrovsky’s Presence Felt at Leafs Camp

Amid the flurry of off-season moves, Sergei Bobrovsky’s arrival in Toronto has gotten lost in the shuffle. But the veteran netminder has wasted no time making his presence felt at Maple Leafs camp, providing a “great presence” between the pipes.

Parekh Ready to Be a Difference-Maker

Zayne Parekh proved to be worth the price of admission on Tuesday night, looking like a player ready to be an offensive difference-maker at the NHL level. The Flames prospect is turning heads early in camp.

Conners and Taylor Eye Presidents Cup Upset

Canadians Corey Conners and Nick Taylor are part of the International Team at this year’s Presidents Cup, and both have just one goal: to finally beat the Americans. The duo is set on pulling off the upset.

Hustle & Heart Highlight

Rene Paredes’ 62-Yard Walk-Off

Sometimes one moment defines a season. For Rene Paredes, that moment came on a 62-yard field goal that sailed through the uprights as time expired, giving the Calgary Stampeders a 40-38 victory over Ottawa. It was not only the longest field goal of the veteran’s career, but also the third-longest in CFL history. It single-handedly saved Calgary’s season and buried the Redblacks’ hopes for their first win. That’s clutch.

Performance Corner

The Art of the Low-Event Game

In a 2-1 overtime pre-season game, Oilers forward Ike Howard found value in a low-event game. For an aspiring athlete, this is a reminder that not every shift needs to be a highlight reel. Sometimes the most valuable contribution is playing a quiet, disciplined game that keeps your team in the fight. As Howard is learning, impressing a new coach isn’t always about the flash; it’s about reliability in all situations.

What to Watch

  • B.C. Lions vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders: Friday, September 25 at 10:30 p.m. EDT. Both teams are coming off byes, and the Lions are looking to bounce back after the Josh Hagerty suspension distraction.
  • Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Friday, September 25 at 8:00 p.m. EDT. The Boatmen look to build on their record-setting win, while the Bombers hope to keep their home streak alive.

Daily Hustle Sign-off

That’s the hustle for today. Whether it’s winning with minus-one rushing yard, or kicking a 62-yarder to save your season, remember: the game doesn’t care how you get it done, just that you get it done. See you tomorrow.
