Condell’s Deep Ball Dilemma, Rourke’s Honesty and a Coach’s Real Victory

Honouring Hustle and Heart

Some days in sports journalism you get handed a gift. Tuesday was one of those days for the Winnipeg press corps, courtesy of Tommy Condell himself. The Blue Bombers’ offensive coordinator, tired of questions about his team’s lack of deep shots, told reporters to go look up the numbers on Pro Football Focus. So they did. It did not go the way he probably hoped.

Top Story: Bombers Offence Fails Its Own Coordinator’s Fact-Check

Winnipeg has completed just 10 passes of 30-plus yards this season, tied for the fewest in the CFL alongside the winless Ottawa Redblacks. Every other team in the league has at least 16. When that reality was put to Condell, he pointed the media toward a different stat, the 15-yard completion mark, insisting the deep passing game was better than it looked.

It was not. According to PFF, Winnipeg sits sixth in the league with 69 completions of 15-plus yards, trailing everyone but Calgary, Ottawa and Hamilton. Toronto leads with 91, Montreal has 90, and the league average sits at 74.2. Condell sent people to check his work and the work checked out poorly.

His explanation leaned on defensive structure, insisting opponents are taking away the deep ball and forcing quarterbacks to work through progressions instead. “I just can’t sit there and say, ‘Hey, we’re gonna throw it up there,’” Condell said. Fair enough, except Montreal has completed 26 passes of 30-plus yards this year facing the same defensive game-planning realities, and nobody seems to be taking anything away from the Alouettes.

Dig into Winnipeg’s 10 long completions and the picture gets murkier still. Four relied almost entirely on yards after the catch, two were caught behind the line of scrimmage, and only three actually travelled more than 30 yards in the air, topping out at 37. This is not a defence-imposed limitation. It looks like a scheme decision.

LIV Golf lays off staff

The Saudi-backed league is cutting the majority of its workforce in the first week of September, just days after the 2026 season wrapped in Indianapolis. The move comes four months after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund pulled its financial backing following more than $5 billion in spending over five years. The league’s chief executive is reportedly working a deal with new investors on a tight timeline, but needs players on board first.

Ayyoub Bouaddi arrives at Manchester City with a brain to match his talent

The 18-year-old Morocco international, signed for £85 million from Lille, passed his school exams a year early and is studying for a university degree on the side. “He’s like a computer,” says former Lille academy recruiter Mathieu Frison. “You teach him something, he learns it and can do it immediately.” Replacing Rodri is no small task for anyone, let alone a teenager, but Bouaddi already has three full Ligue 1 seasons and a World Cup appearance on his resume.

Rourke Credits Defence After Earning Player of the Week

Nathan Rourke is not interested in celebrating his own player-of-the-week nod. After completing 22-of-28 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-16 win over Saskatchewan, the B.C. Lions quarterback made it clear he thought his defence, not his arm, won the game. “I don’t particularly feel like I played the way that I know I’m capable of playing,” Rourke said. His lone interception came on an underthrown deep shot, and he was sacked three times, but four takeaways from B.C.’s defence carried the night.

The Lions have won four straight and sit at .500, a remarkable turnaround from an 0-3 start marred by injuries, including Rourke’s own shoulder issue that cost him two games. He now owns the honesty that comes with elite standards: “I’m not where I want to be right now. I feel like I owe it to this organization to get better.” B.C. visits winless Ottawa on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. EDT, looking to make it five straight.

Fields Pushes Back After Dinwiddie’s Criticism

In Ottawa, former defensive coordinator William Fields is pushing back on head coach Ryan Dinwiddie’s claim that his suggestions fell on “deaf ears” before Fields was fired hours after a 34-13 loss to Montreal on July 31. Fields says he actually increased his blitz rate and man coverage to a season-high in that very game, exactly as requested, and it backfired.

Saskatchewan brings back Aaron Patrick

The Roughriders re-signed the six-foot-five American defensive lineman on Wednesday after he sat on the retired list since May. Patrick was part of Saskatchewan’s Grey Cup-winning roster last year and returns to add depth up front.

Hustle & Heart Highlight

William Fields being let go from his coaching job is not the real story here. In March, Fields was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery that same month, losing 65 pounds in the process. Two weeks after surgery, he was back at training camp in Ottawa, coaching through a season while his body was still healing.

“I’m still healing now, so this actually was a blessing in disguise because I’m able to come home and finally heal,” Fields said.

His prognosis is good, no chemotherapy required, and he is expected to make a full recovery. Through all of it, he still found room to root for the players and staff he helped bring together in Ottawa. That is perspective worth applauding, win or lose.

Performance Corner

Nathan Rourke’s 2025 MOP season set an incredibly high bar: 70.4 percent completion, 5,290 yards, 31 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, plus 564 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores.

This year through eight starts he sits at 69.4 percent, 2,429 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions, with just 129 rushing yards. The efficiency is still elite, the volume and rushing damage have dipped, largely due to the shoulder injury and a slow team start.

His last four outings, all over 300 passing yards, suggest the arm talent has not gone anywhere. The complementary football Rourke is chasing might be the difference between a good Lions team and a scary one down the stretch.

What to Watch Today

  • Friday, August 28: Montreal (9-1) visits Winnipeg (5-5) at Princess Auto Stadium, 8:30 p.m. EDT on TSN and RDS. Condell’s offence gets an immediate chance to answer its critics against the league’s most dangerous secondary-stretching attack.
  • Saturday, August 29: Toronto (5-5) visits Saskatchewan (6-4) at Mosaic Stadium, 7:00 p.m. EDT on TSN. The newly returned Aaron Patrick adds depth to a Riders front seven looking to bounce back from a loss in Vancouver.
  • Sunday, August 30: B.C. (4-5) visits winless Ottawa (0-10) at TD Place, 7:00 p.m. EDT on TSN, RDS2 and CBS Sports Network. Rourke and the red-hot Lions look to make it five wins in a row.
  • Blue Jays fans should keep an eye on the bullpen usage patterns as Toronto continues to patch together a pitching staff hit hard by injuries.

Daily Hustle Sign-Off

That is the hustle for today, folks. Whether it is a coordinator getting fact-checked by his own suggested source, a quarterback holding himself to a standard nobody else would dare ask of him, or a coach fighting cancer while still coaching a football team at 1 a.m., there is no shortage of grit out there. Catch you tomorrow.
