Morning Hustle: Your Daily Sports Fix

Honouring hustle and heart.

Good morning. The Ducks are back in the playoffs after seven years in the wilderness. Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers are reunited in Dallas. And a woman just broke through one of football’s last barriers. Let’s dive in.

Anaheim Ducks End Seven-Year Playoff Drought Under Joel Quenneville

The Anaheim Ducks didn’t even have to play Monday night to end their longest playoff drought in franchise history.

When the Nashville Predators lost 3-2 to the San Jose Sharks, the Ducks (42-32-6) clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2018. Seven straight seasons of missing out. Seven years of finishing no higher than sixth in their division. Seven years of waiting for this moment.

Joel Quenneville, hired May 8 to replace Greg Cronin, has delivered exactly what he promised. In February, he became just the second coach in NHL history to reach 1,000 wins, and he’s reshaped the Ducks in his image.

The turnaround has been built on offense. After three straight years in the bottom three, Anaheim now ranks 13th in scoring at 3.23 goals per game… a full-scale philosophical shift.

Cutter Gauthier leads the team with 40 goals and 67 points. Leo Carlsson sits right behind him with 66 points in 68 games. And rookie Beckett Sennecke has 60 points in 80 games, proof the future arrived ahead of schedule.

Then came the John Carlson trade. Since joining Anaheim on March 5, the veteran defenseman has 12 points in 14 games, including his first career hat trick in a 6–1 win over San Jose on April 9. The trade signaled the Ducks were done waiting.

Anaheim sits third in the Pacific Division, one point behind Edmonton and three behind Vegas, with a game in hand on both as the regular season winds down.

But for now, the celebration is simple. After seven years of watching from home, the Ducks are back where they belong.

Quick Hits

Azzi Fudd Goes No. 1 to Dallas, Reunites With Paige Bueckers

Azzi Fudd was selected first overall by the Dallas Wings on Monday night, reuniting her with former UConn teammate Paige Bueckers. The 5-foot-11 guard led UConn to last year’s national title and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, becoming the program’s seventh No. 1 pick. Bueckers, the top selection by Dallas in 2025 and the reigning WNBA rookie of the year, watched from a sold-out crowd in Manhattan. The draft featured 45 selections across three rounds, with league rosters expanding to 210 this season. UCLA became the first school to have six players chosen in a single draft.

Flyers End Six-Year Playoff Drought

The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout on Monday to clinch their first playoff berth since 2020. The result also clinched a playoff spot for Carolina, who earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference by getting a point in the shootout loss.

Marie-Louise Eta Breaks Barrier in Men’s Football

Marie-Louise Eta will make history when she oversees Union Berlin in their Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg this weekend. It will be the first time a woman appointed as head coach of a men’s team has taken charge of a fixture in one of Europe’s top five leagues. The 34-year-old was given the reins on an interim basis after Steffen Baumgart was sacked on Saturday. Union are seven points clear of the relegation playoff spot but have won just two of their last 14 games.

Leeds Stun Manchester United at Old Trafford

Leeds pulled off their first league win at Old Trafford since February 1981, lifting them six points clear of Tottenham in the relegation battle. Manchester United lost a home game for the first time under interim manager Michael Carrick. United’s struggles were compounded by Lisandro Martínez’s 56th-minute red card for yanking Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s ponytail, suspending him for three matches.

Terence Crawford Fined $75 Over Traffic Stop

Terence Crawford was found guilty of careless driving Monday and ordered to pay a $75 fine stemming from a traffic stop last year during which police ordered the world champion boxer out of his vehicle at gunpoint. Crawford was stopped hours after his hometown of Omaha held a parade to celebrate his victory over Canelo Álvarez. The win made Crawford the first male boxer to capture three unified division titles. He announced his retirement in December with a 42-0 record.

Former NFL Cornerback Chris Payton-Jones Dies at 30

Former NFL cornerback Chris Payton-Jones died in a car accident Saturday night in Florida. He was 30. Payton-Jones was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes when his vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck. He had built a career in content creation after his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals.

World Aquatics Allows Russia to Compete Under Flag Again

Swimming has agreed to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete without restrictions under their own flag and anthem for the first time since 2022, prompting joy in Russia and outrage in Ukraine. The decision by World Aquatics adds momentum to Russia’s bid to be allowed back for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

Morgan Rielly Questions Whether He Played Final Home Game With Leafs

Morgan Rielly admitted Monday that he has wondered whether he played his final home game in Toronto. “It’s crossed my mind before,” the longest‑tenured Leaf said ahead of his 950th game for the club that drafted him fifth in 2012. “All athletes have that at some point, and tonight’s no different.”

The Leafs blew a 3–0 first‑period lead and a 5–3 third‑period lead in a 6–5 loss to the Dallas Stars. Rielly finished with a minus‑18 rating, his worst in nine years. “He’s one of the most selfless teammates I’ve ever had,” John Tavares said. “Where we’re at this season, everyone has to look themselves in the mirror.”

MacKinnon Scores Shootout Winner as Avalanche Top Oilers

Nathan MacKinnon scored the shootout winner as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 2–1 on Monday.

Sam Malinski had the lone regulation goal for the league‑leading Avalanche (53‑16‑11), who have won three of their last four and seven straight on the road. Colorado played without Nazem Kadri, Cale Makar, and Josh Manson.

Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers (40‑30‑11), who have dropped four of their last five. Edmonton remained without Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, though both returned to practice Monday.

McDavid now has 134 points and needs one more to become the seventh player in NHL history to record 135 in a season at least twice.

Sabres Win Atlantic Division, Canadiens to Face Lightning

Tage Thompson scored twice to reach 40 goals on the season, and the Buffalo Sabres clinched the Atlantic Division title with a 5–1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night.

Alex Tuch added a goal and an assist as Buffalo (50‑23‑8) earned its fourth straight victory. The Sabres secured their first division title since 2009–10 and reached 50 wins for just the third time in franchise history.

The result sets up a first‑round playoff series between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens, who are tied for second in the division. Tampa holds the tiebreaker and can lock down home‑ice advantage with a win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

It will be the first postseason meeting between the Lightning and Canadiens since Tampa won the 2021 Stanley Cup Final in five games.

Chad Kelly Claims He’s ‘a New Person,’ NFL Return Still the Goal

Chad Kelly may have missed the entire 2025 season due to injury and recently turned 32, but he still hopes to make it back to the NFL.

Kelly suffered a broken tibia and fibula in the CFL’s East Final in 2024. Now fully healthy, he will be Toronto’s Week 1 starter in 2026. The six‑foot‑one, 215‑pound quarterback was dominant in 2023, winning the league’s Most Outstanding Player award and leading the Argonauts to a 16‑2 regular season, the best in franchise history.

He also addressed his 2018 arrest, which led to his release from Denver. “I wish I would have stayed home that night. You’re definitely young and dumb,” he said. “I’m a father, I’m a husband now. I just want to represent my last name and my family’s name in the right light.”

Blue Bombers Hire Lee Hull as Receivers Coach

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have hired Lee Hull as their receivers coach. The 60‑year‑old previously served in the same role with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016, when T.Y. Hilton led the NFL with 1,448 receiving yards.

Hull also played three seasons in the CFL with the Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts. He caught 48 passes for 756 yards over 19 career games and scored a touchdown for Winnipeg in the 78th Grey Cup.

Giordano Vaccaro Projected as First Overall Pick in CFL Draft

Canadian offensive lineman Giordano Vaccaro is ready for professional football after transferring from the University of Manitoba to Purdue. The Winnipeg native won the J.P. Metras Trophy as the top lineman in the country before accepting a scholarship to Purdue.

Vaccaro began the season in a depth role but earned reps against Indiana in the season-ending matchup. The six‑foot‑two, 307‑pound blocker recorded 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at his pro day in March. “I’m in the best shape of my life,” he said.

Though 3DownNation has projected him as the first overall pick in the 2026 CFL Draft, Vaccaro isn’t focused on where he’ll land. The draft is scheduled for April 28.

Hustle & Heart Highlight

Seven years is a long time to wait.

Long enough for a generation of Ducks fans to grow up without seeing their team in the playoffs. Long enough for the franchise to cycle through coaches, rebuild rosters, and wonder if the glory days were gone for good.

Joel Quenneville arrived last May with a simple message: we’re not here to rebuild. We’re here to win now. And on Monday night, without even stepping on the ice, the Ducks proved he meant it.

There’s something powerful about ending a drought. It belongs to the players who pushed through seven years of frustration, and to the fans who kept showing up, buying jerseys, and defending a team that hadn’t given them much to celebrate.

This is what hustle and heart look like on an organizational level: refusing mediocrity, choosing belief over the easy path, deciding that today can be different from yesterday.

Seven years of waiting just became worth it.

Sign-Off

The Ducks are back in the playoffs after seven years. Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers are reunited in Dallas. And a woman just took charge of a men’s team in one of Europe’s top leagues.

Sports gives us moments like these. The droughts that finally end. The teammates who find their way back together. The barriers that fall when the right person gets the opportunity.

Go make your Tuesday count.
