“Honouring hustle and heart.”
Good morning. March Madness delivered another stunner. Luka went supernova in Miami. And up north, the Oilers laid an egg against the team that’s haunted them for two straight years. Let’s dive in.

VCU Erases 19-Point Deficit to Stun North Carolina in OT
March Madness doesn’t care about your bracket.
Terrence Hill Jr. made a stepback three-pointer with 15 seconds left in overtime and 11th-seeded VCU erased a 19-point second-half deficit to stun sixth-seeded North Carolina 82-78 on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Hill finished 7 for 10 from three-point range and scored 20 of his 34 points after halftime as VCU (28-7) won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2016.
Think about that for a second. Eight years without a tournament win. Eight years of waiting, watching, wondering if the moment would ever come again. And when it finally did, it came in the most dramatic fashion possible.
Down 19 in the second half against a storied program like North Carolina, most teams fold. Most teams accept their fate. VCU didn’t just refuse to lose. They refused to stop believing.
Hill went nuclear when it mattered most, draining seven threes and carrying his team on his back. The stepback three with 15 seconds left in overtime? That’s the stuff March legends are made of.
North Carolina entered as the favorite. VCU left as the story everyone will be talking about today.

It tied the second-most points Dončić ever scored, behind a 73-point night against Atlanta in 2024 and matching a 60-point night against New York in 2022. Dončić also broke the record for a Heat opponent, topping James Harden’s 58-point effort in 2019.
NHL Player Safety Dominates GMs Meetings
Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon and GM Eric Tulsky confronted NHL commissioner Gary Bettman about head contact during this week’s GMs meetings. After Bettman asked if GMs agree with the current standard of Rule 48 (Illegal Check to the Head), silence followed until Tulsky supported stronger enforcement. Bettman responded, “Well, I guess we know which owner this was.” When he asked if anyone else agreed, silence followed again. Connor McDavid’s dismay at the Auston Matthews injury has sparked conversation about the discipline process.
Inter Miami Exit Concacaf Champions Cup
Inter Miami is out of the Concacaf Champions Cup after defeat to Nashville. The exit is a reminder that time rolls on for Lionel Messi and the club. Liga MX continues to dominate the competition with 21 winners since 2001, while only one of the last 25 installments has seen an MLS team crowned as Concacaf’s best.
🍁 North of the Border
Canadian sports delivered heartbreak, health updates, roster moves, and a player safety confrontation that’s making waves across the league.
Oilers Shutout 4-0 by Panthers in Dispassionate Effort
The Edmonton Oilers couldn’t find any juice Thursday, rolling over 4-0 to the Florida Panthers in a game that was never in doubt.
Florida beat them in the 2024 and 2025 Stanley Cup Finals, with Matthew Tkachuk and the Tkachuks mouthing off Leon Draisaitl with their “bridesmaid” shtick. The Oilers haven’t beaten them at home since Rexall Place, a skein that runs to 8-0-3 in regulation in the Panthers’ favour.
“Obviously they had more jump,” said Darnell Nurse. You’d think just looking at that uniform during warmups might ignite some fire.
Instead, the Oilers played with no more aggression or physicality than “a guy shovelling his walk,” finishing without even a scrum.
Embarrassing? Of all the places to roll out a disinterested effort, a game against the team wearing that Panthers logo is the last place you’d expect to see it.
Lightning Rout Canucks 6-2, Kucherov Moves into Second in NHL Scoring
Nikita Kucherov had a goal and two assists as Tampa Bay routed Vancouver 6-2 on Thursday. Jake Guentzel, Darren Raddysh, Yanni Gourde, Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel also scored for the Lightning (42-21-4). Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves for his league-leading 32nd win. Kucherov’s three-point night moved him into sole possession of second place in the NHL scoring race with 114 points, one behind leader Connor McDavid (115). Vancouver allowed six goals or more for the ninth time this season.
Canadiens Lose to Red Wings After Bad Bounce Costs Them Lead
Montreal played “a mature game” and were “in control for a long time” but lost 3-1 to Detroit after Mike Matheson lost the puck, lost his balance, and then his cool. Bad bounces and a rolling puck undid the Canadiens after they played near perfectly for 56 minutes. Alex DeBrincat picked up Matheson’s lost puck and buried it for a 2-1 Red Wings lead with 3:25 to go. The Canadiens barely hold third place in the Atlantic Division with 84 points and 14 games remaining. Boston and Detroit also have 84 points. The playoff race just got tighter.
Healthy Jakob Poeltl Aiding Raptors in Playoff Push
Jakob Poeltl missed 33 of 68 games this season with back problems but is healthy now and it’s perfectly timed for Toronto’s playoff push. Over his past 10 games, Poeltl has averaged 12.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and a steal while converting 71.1% of his field-goal chances. After putting up 36 minutes against Detroit with 21 points, 18 rebounds and five assists, Poeltl said: “I felt fine, honestly.” The Raptors face Nikola Jokic and Denver on Friday. Jokic is averaging 28.2 points, 12.6 rebounds and 10.6 assists this season.
Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage to Begin Season on IL with Shoulder Impingement
Trey Yesavage will open the season on the injured list due to a shoulder impingement. “I got here, obviously I had to say something,” the 22-year-old said after reporting a pinching sensation in his right shoulder. Combined with José Berríos’ stress fracture, Yesavage’s absence puts Eric Lauer into the rotation out of the gate. Yesavage soared through five levels last year before pitching in six post-season games, including dominant outings versus the Yankees and Dodgers.
Brett Lauther Not Planning to Retire After Saskatchewan Release
Veteran Canadian kicker Brett Lauther doesn’t want his release from Saskatchewan to mark the end of his CFL career. The 35-year-old struggled in 2025, connecting on 39-of-54 field goal attempts (72.2%) and making 91.2% of his converts. He also missed a 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the Grey Cup. “It wasn’t good enough. And obviously, that’s what led to where I’m at now,” Lauther said. He’s open to offers from other CFL franchises for the first time since 2017.
CFL Award Finalists Named
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Calgary Stampeders, and Saskatchewan Roughriders are nominated for the inaugural Ted Goveia Football Operations Award. The award honours a football operations department for outstanding achievement in scouting, player identification, roster building and leadership. The late Ted Goveia passed away in September at age 55 after a battle with cancer. Recognition will take place during the CFL Coach of the Year Celebration on March 25 in Edmonton.
Canadian DBs Perform at Michigan State Pro Day
Canadian defensive backs Malcolm Bell and Devynn Cromwell performed at Michigan State’s pro day on Thursday. Bell ran a forty-yard dash in the 4.50-second range (scouts clocked him at 4.48), a 4.36-second short shuttle, and 7.13-second three-cone drill. The six-foot-one defender from Montreal recorded 33 total tackles for the Spartans in 2025. Cromwell recorded 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench, leapt 40.5 inches in the vertical, and an eleven-foot, three-inch broad jump before suffering an injury. Eight CFL teams attended.
Tiger-Cats Add Former 1,000-Yard NFL Rusher to Neg List
Hamilton added former NFL running back James Robinson to their negotiation list after he was released by the UFL’s Louisville Kings. Robinson ran for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie with Jacksonville in 2020, earning a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team. His production declined after suffering a torn Achilles, but in his career, he ran 515 times for 2,264 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Lorenzo Mauldin IV Retires as Ottawa Redblack
Veteran CFL defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin IV signed a one-day contract with Ottawa to officially retire as a Redblack. The 33-year-old recorded 163 defensive tackles and 36 quarterback sacks over 91 career CFL games. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player with the Redblacks in 2022 and set the franchise’s single-season sacks record.
💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight
Eight years is a long time to wait for anything.
VCU entered Thursday night carrying that weight. Eight years since their last NCAA Tournament victory. Eight years of watching other teams celebrate March Madness moments while they sat home or bowed out early.
And when the moment finally came, it came with a 19-point deficit staring them in the face.
Most teams would have packed it in. Most teams would have accepted their fate against a program like North Carolina and chalked it up to experience.
Terrence Hill Jr. and his teammates had other plans.
Hill went 7 for 10 from three-point range and scored 20 of his 34 points after halftime. He made the plays when they mattered most, culminating in a stepback three with 15 seconds left in overtime that sent VCU to victory.
That’s what we honor here. Not the teams that cruise to easy wins. The teams that refuse to quit when every logical reason to give up is staring them in the face.
VCU waited eight years for this moment. And when it arrived, they seized it with both hands.
👊 Sign-Off
VCU erased 19 points and eight years of drought. Luka dropped 60 in Miami. And the Oilers forgot to show up against the team that’s broken their hearts twice.
Sports gives us these moments. The comebacks that defy logic. The performances that rewrite record books. The letdowns that leave you shaking your head.
Go make your Friday count.
