Caufield’s Hat Trick Powers Canadiens as Playoff Push Intensifies
Cole Caufield is chasing history, and the Montreal Canadiens are finding their best hockey at exactly the right moment.
Caufield scored three goals on Saturday as Montreal crushed the New York Islanders 7-3, reaching 43 goals on the season and moving within seven of 50. If he gets there, he’ll become the first Canadiens player to hit that mark since Stephane Richer scored 51 in 1990. That’s 36 years ago. Let that sink in.
But this wasn’t just about Caufield. This was about a team that finally figured out who they need to be.
After loose-playing losses to San Jose and Anaheim last weekend that saw them give up 32 goals in nine games off the Olympic break, the Canadiens had a conversation. A deep one. About how you can’t win games 5-4 and 6-5 at this time of year. About how young talent needs to grow up when the games start to matter.
“We knew we needed to change something,” said Kaiden Guhle. “We were giving up too many goals. Sure, we were scoring, but in this league, it’s tough to win games 5-4, 6-5, especially at this time of year.”
The Canadiens dominated the first period against New York, spending 9:37 in the offensive zone and firing 17 shots. They somehow trailed 2-1 anyway. In years past, that deflates a young team. On Saturday, they refused to let it.
Alex Newhook, who failed to block a shot that cost them a game against Detroit on Thursday, lifted his team with a crucial tying goal. Then Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky connected with Caufield to get him started. When the Islanders tied it 3-3 early in the third, Montreal didn’t flinch.
“I just felt a hungry group that wanted to get what they wanted,” said coach Martin St. Louis. “They went after it, and they got it.”
Slafkovsky finished with two goals and two assists to break through the 60-point barrier for the first time in his career with 61. Suzuki added four assists to also reach 61 points, two more than any other season in his career. Guhle, back from long-term absences, played his best game of the season with a goal and two assists.
This wasn’t just a win. This was a statement. With 13 games remaining and the playoff race suffocating the Eastern Conference, the Canadiens closed out the week 2-1-0 against teams chasing them in the standings.
“Our group is finding its best version,” said St. Louis. “But you can’t have a group finding its best version without the individuals finding their best version, and a lot of guys are starting to find their best version.”
Cole Caufield became the first Canadiens player to reach 40 goals in a season since Vincent Damphousse in 1994. Now he’s chasing 50. And the Canadiens are chasing a playoff spot with the kind of mature, defensively sound hockey that wins in March and April.
They finally figured it out. Just in time.

Oilers Lose Again But Don’t Lose Ground in “Pillow Fight” Division
The Edmonton Oilers lost 5-2 to Tampa Bay on Saturday, and Connor McDavid perfectly summed up the bizarre state of the Pacific Division: “It’s a bit of a pillow fight right now.”
Here’s how bad it’s getting. All six Pacific Division teams that played on Saturday lost in regulation. Vegas, L.A., San Jose, Seattle, Vancouver, and Edmonton all went down. The Oilers didn’t lose any ground despite dropping their second straight game.
“We’re fortunate to play in this division. A lot of teams are fortunate to play in this division,” McDavid admitted.
Nikita Kucherov had two goals and two assists to move two points ahead of McDavid for the league scoring lead with 116 points. Kucherov now has 12 points in his last three games and 22 in his last eight. Anthony Cirelli added two goals for Tampa (43-21-4).
McDavid’s top unit got destroyed, combining to go minus-14. The captain remains one goal from 400 in his career, one assist from 800, and two points short of 1,200. With 11 games remaining, Edmonton (34-28-9) is fine for a playoff berth. Their game, however, is still a work in progress.
Maple Leafs Fall Apart After Warmup Accident Injures Stolarz
The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t even make it to puck drop before things fell apart in Ottawa.
William Nylander accidentally hit goalie Anthony Stolarz in the throat with a puck during warmups, sending him to the hospital. Joseph Woll, who had been called out by coach Craig Berube the night before for needing to make a big save, was thrust into emergency action without preparation.
The Leafs were outshot 43-14 and out-chanced 44-18 in a 5-2 loss to the Senators. “I always come in and shoot a puck in the glove, and this one just came off a little bit to the left. I hit him in the neck, so I was obviously worried for him,” said Nylander, who has been texting with Stolarz.
Tim Stützle’s power-play goal in the first period “deflated us,” according to rookie Easton Cowan. The game wasn’t 15 minutes old. Toronto has now recorded 29 regulation losses in a season to forget. Stolarz was released from hospital and flew home with the team.
Canada Reaches Women’s Curling World Championship Final
Kerri Einarson will play for her first gold medal at the women’s world curling championship after Canada beat Japan 11-3 in the semifinal on Saturday in Calgary.
A sold-out crowd of 3,004 celebrated as Einarson and teammates Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Karlee Burgess advanced to Sunday’s final. It’s a moment five years in the making for Einarson, who made her worlds debut at the same venue in 2021 with no fans in attendance due to COVID-19 and was eliminated in the qualification game.
“Oh my god, I have goosebumps all over,” Einarson said. “Our team has been through so much over these years, we’ve had some heartbreakers, so to finally get ourselves into that gold-medal game, it’s a pretty special feeling.”
Canada dominated from the opening end, scoring three right away. Karlee Burgess shot 100 percent in the game. They’ll face Switzerland’s Xenia Schwaller, who beat them earlier in the tournament and defeated Sweden 8-5 in the other semifinal while shooting 93 percent as a team.
CFL Receiver Nick Cenacle Tests at Hawaii Pro Day
Nick Cenacle, the top-ranked receiver in the 2026 CFL Draft, performed for scouts at the University of Hawaii’s pro day on Friday in Sacramento. The Montreal native measured over six-foot-one and 199 pounds, running a 4.72-second forty-yard dash with a 31.5-inch vertical and 10 reps of 225 pounds. Three CFL teams were on hand: the B.C. Lions, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The 2026 CFL Draft is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28.
Roughriders QB Confident in Canadian Receivers
Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris believes young Canadian receivers Dhel Duncan-Busby and Ajou Ajou are ready to step up after the team lost several key pieces. “I think Dhel is a great player. I’ve been a big believer in Dhel from day one,” Harris said. “I think this could be a year where you really see him take off. Ajou, you could really see him take off.” Duncan-Busby caught 29 receptions for 355 yards last season, while Ajou made 22 receptions for 212 yards after returning from the NFL. The Grey Cup champion Roughriders lost West Division All-CFL selection Dohnte Meyers to the NFL.
Ottawa Redblacks QB Dru Brown Restructures Contract
Dru Brown agreed to lower his salary for the 2026 CFL season after an injury-plagued year. The Ottawa quarterback received a $150,000 signing bonus to restructure his deal and has $321,000 in total hard money, down from $462,500 in his original contract. He can earn up to $387,000 with incentives. In 2025, Brown started nine games while fighting through neck, hip and knee problems, posting a 2-7 record. In 2024, he led Ottawa to the playoffs with an 8-6-1 record.
Blue Jays Roll Out Familiar Lineup vs. Pirates
The Toronto Blue Jays rolled out a lineup Saturday against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates with more significance than typical spring training games. George Springer led off with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the three-hole, as he prefers. Nathan Lukes batted second with Addison Barger at four, followed by Alejandro Kirk, Daulton Varsho, Kazuma Okamoto, Ernie Clement and Andres Gimenez. The lineup reflects “how we’re thinking about it” according to the team.
💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight
Kerri Einarson waited five years for this moment.
In 2021, she made her world championship debut at the same venue in Calgary, playing without fans in the building due to COVID-19. The week didn’t go as planned. She was eliminated in the qualification game and left with nothing but disappointment.
Five years later, she’s playing for gold.
After Canada beat Japan 11-3 in Saturday’s semifinal, a sold-out crowd of 3,004 stood and celebrated Einarson and her teammates with cheers. The goosebumps were real. The emotion was genuine.
“Our team has been through so much over these years, we’ve had some heartbreakers, so to finally get ourselves into that gold-medal game, it’s a pretty special feeling,” Einarson said.
This is what we honor. Not the teams that cruise to easy wins. The teams that face heartbreak, pick themselves up, and refuse to quit until they get what they’ve been chasing.
Einarson and her rink have been through it all. The losses. The near-misses. The what-ifs. And now, after years of grinding, they’re one win away from the top of the mountain.
That’s hustle. That’s heart. That’s why you keep showing up.
👊 Sign-Off
The Canadiens are growing up before our eyes. The Oilers are surviving in the NHL’s weakest division. And Kerri Einarson is one win away from the gold medal she’s chased for five years.
Sports gives us these moments. The young teams finding maturity when it matters most. The stars chasing milestones. The athletes who refuse to let heartbreak be the end of the story.
Go make your Sunday count.
