Morning Hustle : Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. A former No. 1 pick played two games in one day to chase his NBA dream. The Senators won with just four defensemen. And Tiger Woods is back after disk replacement surgery. Let’s dive in.

🏆 Top Story

Markelle Fultz’s Remarkable Double-Header Return to the NBA

Some comebacks happen in one moment. Markelle Fultz’s happened in two cities on the same day.

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft played a G-League game Monday morning in Salt Lake City for the Raptors 905, then suited up that same night for the Toronto Raptors in their 143-127 win over the Utah Jazz.

Think about that journey for a second. Fultz played 13 minutes in the G-League game, met with the team’s director of sports science, did a post-game workout in the hallways of the Delta Center, took a congratulatory hug from the 905 head coach, then rode over to the team hotel to prepare for his NBA debut with Toronto.

All in one day. All for a chance most people thought was gone.

Fultz finished with five assists and two steals in 16 minutes, finding Collin Murray-Boyles for layups on his first two possessions. The Raptors set a franchise record with 49 assists, led by Jamal Shead’s career-high 15. RJ Barrett scored 27 points. Toronto improved to 40-31, staying half a game ahead of Atlanta for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

But the real story is how Fultz got here.

The 28-year-old hasn’t played an NBA game since a 21-game run with Sacramento at the end of the 2024-25 season. He nearly had his career thwarted before it began by thoracic outlet syndrome, a compressed nerve in his shoulder and neck that ruined his shooting. Then came a torn ACL. Knee tendinitis. Knee fractures. A toe fracture. And that’s just what’s been listed publicly.

“It’s never been an issue of like, I can’t play this game,” Fultz said before his Raptors debut. “It’s just, do what you need to do to get healthy so you can go play the game to the best of your ability.”

This time, he got off the injury roller-coaster completely. He took time to get his body right. All of it. Shoulder, knees, hips, everything. He worked until he felt entirely ready, refusing training-camp invitations or 10-day contracts until he knew he could compete.

His five-game audition with Raptors 905 was proof of concept. The knack for playing point guard never left him. Getting to the paint, making reads, delivering the ball on time and where it needs to be.

“He knows where the ball has to go,” said 905 head coach Andrew Jones. “He’s seen all the types of pick-and-roll coverages. Nothing fazes him. But what I’ve been most impressed about was his level of professionalism and humility. You know, a former No. 1 pick, he could come in here and have a crazy chip on his shoulder, act like he owns the place. But he walked right in and said, ‘Coach, what do you need me to do?’”

Raptors two-way wing Alijah Martin summed it up best: “He’s a dog, man. His story and his background, the way he came up, the way he had to fight back, I’m just a fan of his. I’m all about adversity and he’s thrived through adversity.”

A quick cameo against the tanking Jazz is a long way from meaningful NBA minutes. But it’s a start. And Fultz hardly looked out of place.

Eight years after being drafted first overall, Markelle Fultz played two games in one day to prove he still belongs.

That’s the kind of story we honor.

Senators Hold Rangers to Nine Shots Using Just Four Defencemen

The Ottawa Senators held the New York Rangers to just nine shots on goal in a 2-1 victory at Madison Square Garden on Monday, the fewest shots against in franchise history and the Rangers’ lowest output since 1955.

Even more impressive? Ottawa played more than half the game with just four defensemen after losing Thomas Chabot in the final seconds of the first period and Lassi Thomson in the second to injuries.

Jordan Spence played a career-high 26 minutes, 44 seconds. Tyler Kleven logged 24:30. Artem Zub played 23:44. Nikolas Matinpalo skated 18:19.

“Whenever you get down to four D-men and you find a way to win, it’s a gutsy effort,” said Warren Foegele, who scored his fifth goal in nine games since joining Ottawa. “The whole group stepped up when those guys went down.”

The Senators became the first team since the salary-cap era began in 2005-06 to hold an opponent under 10 shots. The previous low was nine shots allowed by New Jersey against Washington on Dec. 4, 2003.

“Give them all credit. They played a hell of a game back there,” said coach Travis Green.

Goalie James Reimer acknowledged it wasn’t exactly comfortable seeing so little action despite making only eight saves. “These games are a lot harder than a 30- or a 40-shot night,” he said. “You’re not in a rhythm. You’re not feeling it. It’s not just happening, so you’ve just got to trust it.”

Since starting their playoff push on Jan. 25, the Senators have allowed the fewest shots against in the NHL at just over 21 per game.

Blue Jays Finalize Opening Day Roster

The Toronto Blue Jays wrapped spring training with a quirky intrasquad game on Monday, leaving two roster decisions pending ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. The final bullpen spot is between Rule 5 pick Spencer Miles and Chase Lee, while the last bench spot is between Davis Schneider and Leo Jimenez.

Manager John Schneider signed a two-year extension and GM Ross Atkins signed a five-year extension through 2031 after the Blue Jays came within two outs of winning the World Series.

“When we have time, we like to use it,” Atkins said about the roster decisions. “There’s always the potential of more information coming into the fold.”

The Blue Jays open Friday against the Athletics.

Jonathan Moxey Excited to Lock Down Cornerback Spot with Blue Bombers

Jonathan Moxey signed a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in CFL free agency after starting all 18 regular-season games at field-side cornerback for Hamilton in 2025.

“They showed interest. It feels good to be wanted,” Moxey told 3DownNation. “I like their scheme, I like the attitude that their defence plays with, and they had a need at corner.”

The 30-year-old has made 132 defensive tackles, eight interceptions, one forced fumble and one sack over 82 career games. Hamilton wanted to retain him but negotiations moved slowly.

“As that happens, the window approaches and other teams start calling and you’ve gotta make the best business decision for you and your family,” Moxey said.

Former CFL MOP Kerry Joseph Hired at University of Memphis

The University of Memphis hired longtime CFL quarterback Kerry Joseph. The 52-year-old spent the 2025 season at the University of Texas as a special assistant to the head coach.

Joseph most recently served as quarterbacks coach with the Chicago Bears in 2024.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Markelle Fultz didn’t just return to the NBA… he reclaimed ownership of his story.

After years of injuries, setbacks, and doubt, he chose persistence over resignation. No headlines, no guarantees, just the quiet work of rebuilding a body and a belief system piece by piece.

That’s what makes his comeback resonate. Not the box score. Not the double‑header. But the mindset: the refusal to let circumstance define the ending.

That’s the heartbeat of sport. That’s hustle. That’s heart.

👊 Sign-Off

The Senators won with four defensemen. Fultz played two games in one day. And Tiger Woods is coming back from disk replacement surgery.

Sports gives us these moments. The teams that find a way when logic says it’s impossible. The athletes who refuse to let injuries write the final chapter. The comebacks that remind us why we never count anyone out.

Go make your Tuesday count.
