🏅 Morning Hustle — Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. Baseball is back with robot umps and opening night drama. The Blue Jays are navigating stability and uncertainty in equal measure. And up north, the CFL is buzzing with draft talk, expansion dreams, and quarterbacks taking pay cuts for the team. Let’s dive in.

🏆 Top Story: Zach Collaros Takes $50K Pay Cut to Help Blue Bombers Build a Winner

Sometimes the best leadership happens in a quiet conversation, not on the field.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros agreed to reduce his 2026 compensation from $600,000 to $550,000 before CFL free agency began, giving the team an extra $50,000 to spend on building a championship roster.

The conversation was remarkably simple. General manager Kyle Walters asked if Collaros would be interested in taking a pay cut to help the team. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player and three-time Grey Cup champion didn’t hesitate.

“I asked Zach if that’d be something he’d be interested in. He said, ‘If it helps the team, for sure.’ That was about the extent of it,” Walters said. “When we laid out the plan to Zach and said, ‘Here’s what we’re thinking, this would help.’ He’s like, ‘Whatever I can do to help, I’m on board.’”

And the Blue Bombers put those funds to work.

Jarell Broxton signed a two-year contract worth $250,000 per season, making him the highest-paid American offensive lineman in the CFL. Jake Ceresna will earn $235,000 in hard money in 2026, making him one of the highest-paid defensive linemen. American receiver Tim White inked a deal worth $222,000 in hard money for the upcoming season, while Canadian Tommy Nield signed for $175,000. Defensive back Jonathan Moxey signed on for $135,000 in hard money.

Winnipeg ranked seventh in offensive points scored last year with 416. Ottawa and Edmonton had fewer, and both teams missed the playoffs. If the Bombers want to get back on top in the West Division, more points need to be scored. The upgrades at right tackle with Broxton, an all-star-calibre pass catcher in White, and a Canadian target with upside in Nield should give Collaros’s offence a chance to improve.

“Zach’s a stud, that guy is amazing,” head coach Mike O’Shea said. “He’s a terrific leader. Zach can win us a championship. Zach can be a part of a team that wins a championship.”

Despite the paperwork coming out a little later, Walters confirmed it was all decided prior to those signings. Collaros saw the plan, understood how it would help the team, and made the sacrifice without hesitation.

That’s leadership. That’s what championship culture looks like.

⚡ Quick Hits

Yankees Crush Webb in Opening Night Win

The New York Yankees beat San Francisco 7-0 on Wednesday night as the MLB season began. Max Fried allowed two hits in 6 1/3 shutout innings to become just the fifth Yankees pitcher since 1969 with at least 6 1/3 shutout innings on opening day. José Caballero drove in the go-ahead run and also lost the first challenge taken to MLB’s robot umpire, unsuccessfully appealing a strike by Logan Webb. Aaron Judge went hitless on opening day for the first time and struck out four times.

Barry Bonds Nearly Signed with Yankees in 1992

Barry Bonds revealed on Wednesday that he nearly signed with the New York Yankees in 1992. Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called and told Bonds he’d make him the highest-paid player, but he had to sign the contract by two o’clock that afternoon. “I said, ‘excuse me?’ and I just hung the phone up,” Bonds said. He instead signed a record six-year, $43.75-million deal with the Giants and spent the next 15 seasons on the West Coast, racking up 586 homers and five more MVPs.

NBA Moves Closer to Adding Teams in Seattle and Las Vegas

The NBA has moved a step closer to adding teams in Seattle and Las Vegas. The league’s board of governors met this week and voted to explore bids and applicants for teams exclusively in those two cities, beginning the process for its first expansion in more than two decades. Bids are expected to be in the $7 billion to $10 billion range per franchise.

Elena Rybakina Completes Comeback at Miami Open

Elena Rybakina produced a brilliant comeback to reach the Miami Open semi-finals with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Jessica Pegula on Wednesday. Despite a mediocre start, Rybakina showed once again that the best players in the world pounce on even the smallest drops in intensity. Pegula departed Miami with her fifth straight defeat to the Kazakhstani.

Three US Runners Given Entry to World Championships After Being Led Off Course

Three runners who were led off course in the USA Track & Field Half Marathon Championships have been given entry into the World Road Running Championships. Fans from Five African World Cup Countries Face $15,000 Bond to Enter US

A newly expanded policy from the Trump administration could require travelers from five World Cup-qualified countries to front a bond of up to $15,000 to enter the United States for the tournament. The amounts run between $5,000 and $15,000 for passport holders from Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Tunisia, and Cape Verde. There are no apparent exceptions for athletes or officials. The State Department will expand the program on April 2.

Raptors Fall to Sixth After Loss to Clippers

The Toronto Raptors fell 119-94 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night, dropping to 40-32 and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Kawhi Leonard had 27 points, Darius Garland added 24, and Bennedict Mathurin had 23 off the bench for the Clippers.

Brandon Ingram led Toronto with 18 points. The Raptors shot poorly from the free-throw line (4-of-11) and made numerous defensive mistakes trying to get back into the game. The loss was Toronto’s third straight.

The Raptors are now just a half-game ahead of seventh-place Philadelphia and one game behind fifth-place Atlanta. Things are getting tight in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Maple Leafs Find Brief Reprieve with Back-to-Back Wins

The Toronto Maple Leafs closed out a back-to-back with a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday, their first two-game win streak in nearly two months. The wins came with the team’s loved ones by their side for the annual mentors trip.

Veteran Jake McCabe scored his first goal since November. “My kids were giving me a hard time today — they said, ‘Dad, you never score goals. When are you going to score a goal?’” McCabe said with a chuckle. “So, nice to get one, especially in the first period when I know they’re still up watching.”

The victories provided a reprieve from the cloud hanging over the team since the Olympic break.

Blue Jays Enter Season on Stable Footing Despite Labour Uncertainty

The Toronto Blue Jays are as stable as they’ve been in a long time. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is locked up through the next decade. Leadership is in place for years to come. The club projects a top-five Competitive Balance Tax payroll of approximately $318 million.

But there’s a threat looming. The current collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1, with owners expected to lock out players immediately after. Commissioner Rob Manfred has been signaling owners’ intent to pursue a salary cap, with persistent talk about willingness to lose games, maybe even an entire season, in 2027.

For the Blue Jays, coming off an epic World Series run, the timing could disrupt what they’ve built. President Mark Shapiro acknowledged employees are asking questions about what might happen next year. “It’s obviously on people’s minds,” he noted.

Shapiro’s advice? “You will not find happiness thinking about what’s coming in six months.” Focus on the season ahead, which should be magical.

Blue Jays President Outlines Key Themes for Season

Mark Shapiro discussed key topics on Wednesday including expectations, plans for Rogers Centre, and how recruiting free agents has become a strength. “Guys love playing here, and that is no longer a small subset,” he said.

Shapiro compared Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett for his joyful impact. All-Star Game hosting has been delayed due to the Olympics, possibly pushing Toronto’s bid to 2029 or later. The Blue Jays expressed interest in hosting World Baseball Classic games.

The team is spending at historic levels and expects to sustain that payroll in years to come. “The desire from ownership is to win,” Shapiro said.

Blue Bombers Praise Chris Streveler as He Heads to Retirement

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers offered praise for quarterback Chris Streveler as he appears headed to retirement. “Unbelievable competitor, terrific leader,” head coach Mike O’Shea said.

The 31-year-old spent four seasons with the Blue Bombers. He was at his best during the team’s 2019 Grey Cup run, rushing for 82 yards in the West Semi-Final just three weeks after suffering a distal tibia fracture and severe high-ankle sprain that were initially considered season-ending.

“His will to win (is what stood out most),” said GM Kyle Walters. “He didn’t care about anything — the scoreboard at the end of the game, that’s it.”

Streveler re-tore his ACL in November 2025 and became a free agent in February.

Queen’s Offensive Tackle Poised to Steal Show at CFL Combine

Queen’s University offensive tackle Niklas Henning enters the CFL Combine this weekend with a quiet buzz about what he could accomplish. “My goal is to be the best-testing offensive lineman in each category,” Henning said. “I think I’ll have the 40 on lock. My goal would be sub-4.9.”

The six-foot-six, 290-pound Milton, Ont., native was a tight end just two years ago before moving to tackle. To gain 30+ pounds in one summer, he drank nightly smoothies with ice cream, milk, protein powder, olive oil, peanut butter, Nutella and butter.

“It was delicious. It’s silky smooth,” Henning said. “Oh man, it’s good. You’ve got to try it.”

Some project him as the first U Sports player selected in the 2026 CFL Draft on April 28.

Calgary Stampeders Need New Stadium in Next Five to Seven Years

Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson says the team needs a new stadium in the next five to seven years. “McMahon, it’s already served its purpose. It was built in 1960,” Dickenson said. “I think it’s gotta happen, has to happen, the next five to seven years.”

Average crowds have shrunk over 25 percent since 2015. Three new CFL venues were constructed between 2013-2017, but there’s been no apparent headway on new facilities since then.

Danny Maciocia: Quebec City ‘By Far the Best Option’ for CFL Expansion

Montreal Alouettes GM Danny Maciocia stated he’s a staunch proponent of CFL expansion to Quebec City. “It would be, by far, in my opinion, the best option that’s available,” Maciocia said. “It’s a market that supports their sports teams, and I think it would be a great fit for the CFL.”

The Rouge et Or regularly sell out and set an attendance record of 20,903 in 2024. However, standing in the way is the absence of a long-term stadium. Stade Telus officially seats only 12,750 fans. Maciocia believes it could accommodate a CFL tenant with temporary bleachers short-term before transferring to a new venue.

Montreal Alouettes ‘Extremely Close to Breaking Even’

Montreal Alouettes GM Danny Maciocia says the team is “extremely close to breaking even” financially. “The new structure is one that’s been in place (for) about a year. It seems to be working,” Maciocia said.

Owner Pierre Karl Péladeau says the team “will remain in his family for the longest of time.” The Alouettes play in one of the league’s smallest stadiums and don’t own their practice facility, yet are approaching profitability.

Ottawa Redblacks Open to Trading No. 1 Pick in CFL Draft

The Ottawa Redblacks are willing to trade the first overall pick in the 2026 CFL Draft if they receive the right offer. “We’re going to be open to listening to anything,” head coach Ryan Dinwiddie said. “Is it going to help our football club this year and in the future — and if that’s an opportunity for us to get better, we’ll look at that.”

This year’s draft class is full of NCAA players. “It’s a very strong draft,” said VP Shawn Burke. The 2026 CFL Draft is scheduled for April 28.

Toronto Argonauts Believe Chad Kelly Can Regain MOP Form

Toronto Argonauts head coach Mike Miller believes quarterback Chad Kelly can regain his CFL Most Outstanding Player form after rehabbing from a broken right leg suffered in the 2024 East Final. “I don’t see any reason why not. Chad’s a great competitor,” Miller said.

Kelly hasn’t played since November 9, 2024, meaning he won’t have seen the field in 580 days when Toronto’s regular season opener arrives on June 12 in Montreal. Miller said Kelly has been fully cleared to start training camp.

Saskatchewan Roughriders Prepare for Life After Trevor Harris

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have four quarterbacks behind 39-year-old Trevor Harris, with Jack Coan having the advantage in the backup competition. “Jack has a leg up with being here. We’ve invested two years in Jack,” GM Jeremy O’Day said.

With Harris turning 40 on May 31 and being year-to-year, the Roughriders know it’s time to prepare for life after he retires. “You don’t really know when it’s going to be the players’ last game. Trevor’s not 30 years old,” O’Day said.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Zach Collaros didn’t have to take a pay cut.

The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player and three-time Grey Cup champion was already under contract for $600,000. He’s earned every penny of it and more. At 36 years old, with a body that’s taken a beating over a long career, no one would have blamed him for keeping every dollar.

But when Kyle Walters asked if he’d be interested in reducing his salary to $550,000 to help the team sign better players, Collaros didn’t negotiate. He didn’t ask for details. He didn’t think about it overnight.

He said, “If it helps the team, for sure.”

That was the entire conversation.

The Blue Bombers used that $50,000 to sign the highest-paid American offensive lineman in the CFL, one of the highest-paid defensive linemen, an all-star-calibre receiver, a promising Canadian target, and a solid defensive back. They used it to build a championship roster around their franchise quarterback.

Collaros could have kept the money. Instead, he invested it in his teammates. In their chances. In one more shot at a Grey Cup.

“Zach’s a stud, that guy is amazing,” Mike O’Shea said. “He’s a terrific leader.”

This is what we honor. Not the individual stats. Not the contract size. The willingness to sacrifice for the team. The understanding that championships aren’t won by one player hoarding resources, but by everyone pulling in the same direction.

Chris Streveler played a 2019 playoff game three weeks after suffering fractures that were supposed to end his season. He rushed for 82 yards because his team needed him.

Zach Collaros took a pay cut because his team needed help.

That’s hustle. That’s heart. That’s championship football.

👊 Sign-Off

Baseball is back with robot umps making their debut. The Blue Jays are navigating the best stability they’ve had in decades while staring down labour uncertainty. And up north, quarterbacks are taking pay cuts, prospects are drinking butter smoothies to gain weight, and the CFL is buzzing with expansion dreams and draft intrigue.

Sports gives us these moments. The leaders who sacrifice for the team. The athletes who play through injuries that should end their seasons. The dreamers who believe a 10th CFL team could work in Quebec City.

Go make your Thursday count.
