Morning Hustle : Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. The trade deadline is almost here, and the tone around the league has shifted. Yesterday was about teams stumbling into trouble. Today is about teams acknowledging what they are and making decisions that match their reality. One general manager is challenging his players to fix their own problems, two Canadian clubs are preparing to reshape their rosters, and a curling legend is reflecting on a gold medal that demanded everything he had. Let’s get into it.

🏆 Top Story: Oilers GM Stan Bowman Says No Trade Will Fix Team’s Defensive Woes

Stan Bowman didn’t mince words ahead of Friday’s trade deadline: the Edmonton Oilers’ problems can’t be solved by acquiring new players.

“There has to be a bigger commitment from our players, all of our players, to play smarter hockey and not try to make plays every shift,” Bowman said Monday. “Maybe it’s having more respect for the game — the simplicity of the game. We want to put on a show, we want to score goals. But there’s two sides to it, and I think we haven’t managed that very well as a team.”

The comments came before Edmonton’s 5-4 overtime win against Ottawa on Tuesday, a game that perfectly illustrated Bowman’s point. The Oilers trailed 4-2 after 40 minutes before Leon Draisaitl (two goals, five points) and the offense bailed them out. Evan Bouchard scored the overtime winner on the power play.

It was a thrilling comeback. It was also exactly what Bowman said can’t be the recipe for success.

“You don’t see me with a huge smile on my face,” said Zach Hyman, who tied the game with 1:25 left and the goalie pulled. “We’ve been to the Final two years in a row, we know what it takes. We know what type of hockey you have to play. If you want to be successful, you’ve got to keep the puck out of your net.”

The Oilers are the worst defensive team in the NHL over the past six weeks. They’ve allowed a goal 3:34 into games on egregious plays. They’ve given up four goals through 25 minutes. And now their GM is publicly saying the fix isn’t coming from outside the room.

“The way to fix that, it’s not going to be magical new players,” Bowman said. “It’s going to be the approach that we take as a team.”

Translation: figure it out, or this season ends badly.

Arizona Cardinals Releasing Kyler Murray, Still Owe Him $36.8M

The Cardinals are releasing former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray at the beginning of the new league year on March 11. The 28-year-old quarterback is owed $36.8 million in guaranteed money for 2026 and will be free to sign with another team. Murray showed glimpses of genius but was uneven during his time in Arizona, reaching the playoffs only once. It’s a stunning fall for a player who was supposed to be the franchise’s future.

Braves’ Profar Faces 162-Game Ban After Second PED Test

Atlanta designated hitter Jurickson Profar faces a 162-game suspension after a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs, ESPN reported Tuesday. If confirmed, the 33-year-old will forfeit his entire $15 million salary for 2026 and be ineligible for the postseason and this month’s World Baseball Classic. This is Profar’s second PED suspension. When you get caught twice, the consequences get severe.

Wolves Stun Liverpool with 94th-Minute Winner

Bottom club Wolves grabbed their second Premier League win in five days with a 94th-minute stunner, beating Liverpool 2-1. André’s deflected shot beat Alisson after Mohamed Salah appeared to rescue a point for the visitors. It was Liverpool’s fifth stoppage-time defeat this season, leaving manager Arne Slot “hunched over, winded by defeat.” For Wolves, who waited six months for their first win in January, it’s suddenly party time. Coach Rob Edwards said: “It’s not great for my heart, but I could get used to it.”

England Routs Ukraine 6-1 in Women’s World Cup Qualifying

England opened their Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign with a 6-1 victory over Ukraine after a goalless first half. Alessia Russo, Georgia Stanway, and Jess Park all scored twice as the European champions found their rhythm. Park continued her bright Manchester United form. The English side was profligate in the first half but “remained fully confident in their ability” before opening the floodgates.

Czech Coach Who Filmed Female Players Faces Lifetime Ban Call

The Czech player union has called for a lifetime football ban for coach Petr Vlachovsky, who was convicted of secretly filming 14 female players in changing rooms and showers over four years. Vlachovsky received a suspended one-year prison sentence and a five-year domestic coaching ban but has not been banned from coaching abroad. He was also caught in possession of child sexual abuse material. The union is demanding stronger action.

Connor Bedard Named Blackhawks Alternate Captain

Chicago has named Connor Bedard an alternate captain, giving the young star added leadership responsibilities. It’s a vote of confidence in the franchise cornerstone.

Canadian hockey is in crisis mode, with two franchises holding fire sales, one blowing a lead in spectacular fashion, and one curling legend making it clear he’s not coming back for 2030.

Marc Kennedy on Olympic Gold, Controversy, and Definitively Ruling Out 2030

Team Canada curler Marc Kennedy sat down for a revealing interview 10 days after winning Olympic gold in Cortina. The 44-year-old two-time champion discussed how the double-touch controversy “made us a better team” by forcing everyone to have each other’s backs.

“Getting off social media for the week was important for me,” Kennedy said. “Really surrounding myself with great people, great teammates, my family, people that love you and want to see you succeed, was the secret.”

His team is 5-0 at the Brier despite starting the week at “five percent” energy. Kennedy called this Olympics “much, much more difficult” than 2010 because the quality of competition is incomparable.

When asked about competing in 2030, his answer was definitive: “No. No.”

Also revealed: Kennedy stopped drinking almost a decade ago and consumed zero beers after winning gold, while his teammates “had their share of fun.”

Canadiens Blow Lead in Wild 7-5 Loss to Sharks

Montreal gave away a game they controlled, losing 7-5 to San Jose after taking a 2-1 lead and later rallying from 5-2 down to tie it 5-5. The Canadiens were “too loose” according to defenseman Kaiden Guhle, who used that term repeatedly. They forced passes, allowed Macklin Celebrini his 30th goal plus three assists, and inexcusably took a too-many-men penalty with 4:57 to play that led to the game-winner. “We played some good minutes, but not enough of them,” said coach Martin St. Louis. It was Montreal’s first regulation loss in seven games, costing them ground in the Atlantic Division race.

Raptors Can’t Compete with East’s Best

Toronto fell 111-95 to New York, their fourth loss to the Knicks this season, all by at least 16 points. The Raptors are now 4-16 against the ten teams with better records and 1-15 against top 10 teams since November 24. Former Raptor OG Anunoby had 15 points for the Knicks. “Learning how to close games is something they’re doing well right now, and we’re not doing well enough,” said Immanuel Quickley, who was traded to Toronto for Anunoby in December 2024 and hasn’t beaten his former team since. The Knicks’ bench outscored Toronto’s reserves 26-8.

Canucks Trade Deadline: Nearly Everyone Available

Vancouver has moved fully into deadline mode after another difficult stretch, and the focus has shifted from results to reshaping the roster. Management is listening on a wide range of players and is prepared to make significant changes if the right offers appear. The front office is prioritizing long term flexibility and is open to creative deals that accelerate a reset. The expectation around the league is that Vancouver will be active, and the only real surprise would be a quiet deadline.

Maple Leafs Have No Choice But to Sell

Toronto has reached the point where adding is no longer realistic. After another setback earlier this week and with the standings leaving little margin, the front office is preparing to convert short term pieces into future assets. Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton are drawing interest, and the Leafs are motivated to rebuild their draft capital after several years of spending picks to stay competitive. Management still believes in the core, but the priority now is avoiding missed opportunities at a deadline where sellers hold leverage.

Max Scherzer’s Trust with John Schneider Key to Blue Jays

Manager John Schneider revealed a World Series Game 7 moment: with Shohei Ohtani due up in the ninth, Schneider asked Max Scherzer for advice. “Whatever you decide is gonna be right,” Scherzer replied. “You’ve been making the right decisions all year.” That trust defines their relationship as Scherzer returns for year two. The 41-year-old says he’s ready for Opening Day and aims to make a rotation with seven candidates for five spots. Scherzer signed for $3 million plus incentives after the Blue Jays came “as close as you possibly can to winning the whole thing.”

Ottawa Redblacks Aggressive in CFL Free Agency

The Redblacks signed 12 players from other franchises under new GM/head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, including four from Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan. Five new defensive starters include Habakkuk Baldonado, A.J. Allen, Nyles Morgan, C.J. Reavis, and Demerio Houston. On offense, explosive additions like running back Greg Bell and receiver Ayden Eberhardt join a stacked receiving group. Longtime NFLer Andy Isabella and his 4.31 speed should add juice.

Former CFL Commissioner Ambrosie Hired by Siksika Nation

Randy Ambrosie has been hired as president and CEO of the Siksika Group of Companies, managing investments for the Siksika Nation located about 95 kilometres east of Calgary. Ambrosie served as CFL commissioner from June 2017 to April 2025, shepherding the league through COVID-19 and negotiating a seven-year CBA. The 62-year-old Winnipeg native played nine CFL seasons and won a Grey Cup in 1993.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Marc Kennedy is 44 years old. He just won his second Olympic gold medal 16 years after his first. He did it while dealing with a double-touch controversy that could have torn his team apart. Instead, it made them stronger.

“For all the bad that came from it, the good was that we were a better team,” Kennedy said. “At the end of the day it may have helped us win a gold medal.”

Kennedy’s energy tank was at “five percent” when he arrived at the Brier. He’s had more sleep there this week than during the entire two weeks in Italy. He stopped drinking almost a decade ago, so while his teammates celebrated with beers, he celebrated with family and purpose.

When you win Olympic gold in 2010, you’re naive. You think it’s the first of many. Sixteen years later, you know how hard it really is.

“This one was much, much more difficult,” Kennedy said. “This one was extremely special.”

That’s what we honor here. Not the easy wins. The hard ones. The ones that test everything you’ve got and force you to find more.

The deadline is almost here, and teams are revealing who they really are. Some are reshaping their futures, some are holding firm, and one contender is being told that the solution has to come from within the room.

At the same time, a 44 year old curler just reminded everyone that the hardest victories are the ones that stay with you.
