Morning Hustle : Your Daily Sports Fix

“Honouring hustle and heart.”

Good morning. The Formula One season kicked off with Mercedes making a serious statement, Manchester City pulled off another comeback for the ages, and up in Canada, one veteran chose to stay and rebuild rather than chase a Cup. Let’s dive in.

🏆 Top Story: Mercedes Dominates Australian GP as Russell Wins Season Opener

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli just announced Mercedes is back.

Russell won the Australian Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday with Antonelli finishing second, securing a commanding Mercedes one-two in the Formula One season opener in Melbourne. Russell took complete control from the front of the grid, though Ferrari brought “a thrilling and feisty scrap to the opening stages” before fading.

Charles Leclerc finished third and Lewis Hamilton fourth for Ferrari.

The result was emphatic. The performance was dominant. And if you’re anyone not driving a silver arrow this season, you should be very, very worried.

The day wasn’t without drama. Home hopeful Oscar Piastri crashed into the wall during the formation lap before the race even began, ending his Grand Prix before it started. But once the lights went out, this was the George Russell and Mercedes show.

After a challenging few seasons, Mercedes came to Melbourne and made a statement. The rest of the grid has officially been put on notice.

⚡ Quick Hits

Pep Guardiola Faces Two-Game Touchline Ban

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola received his sixth yellow card of the season during the match against Newcastle, triggering an automatic two-game touchline ban. The ban applies to Premier League and FA Cup matches but not domestic finals, meaning he’ll be in the dugout when City face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final later this month. Guardiola joked about it: “We have all the records in this country, all of them. We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it, two-game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games.” Only Pep could get suspended and turn it into a flex.

Manchester City Stage FA Cup Comeback at Newcastle

Speaking of City, Omar Marmoush scored twice, including “a real show stopper,” and Savinho added another as Manchester City came from behind to beat Newcastle in the FA Cup. Pep Guardiola had Marmoush “in the tightest of bear hugs” after the Egyptian’s second goal in the 73rd minute. The comeback victory “potentially shattered Newcastle’s entire season.” City doing City things.

Chelsea Deny Wrexham in FA Cup Thriller

Chelsea defeated Wrexham 4-2 after extra time in a dramatic FA Cup fifth-round match that had absolutely everything. Wrexham twice took the lead through Sam Smith and Callum Doyle, but an Arthur Okonkwo own goal and Josh Acheampong strike forced extra time. Alejandro Garnacho volleyed home Chelsea’s third before João Pedro sealed it. Lewis Brunt thought he’d scored in the 114th minute to send it to penalties, but VAR ruled it offside. George Dobson was sent off late in normal time. It was “everything a cup tie should be” with “pure entertainment.” Hollywood will have to wait for another sequel.

Tadej Pogacar Wins Record Fourth Strade Bianche

World champion Tadej Pogacar won a record fourth Strade Bianche title with a dominant performance, making “a typically devastating long-range break around 80km from the finish” before cruising to the line in Siena for his third win in a row. Teenage French sensation Paul Seixas finished second. The four-time Tour de France winner proved “his appetite to triumph, and dominantly, has not diminished despite his myriad successes.” Milan-San Remo is in two weeks, and Pogacar is clearly ready.

Olympic Champion Alysa Liu Withdraws from Worlds

Olympic figure skating champion Alysa Liu withdrew from the world championships later this month, an “unsurprising move” after she won “the first Winter Games gold medal by an American woman in more than two decades” in Milan. Sarah Everhardt will replace Liu on the US team roster for worlds beginning March 24 in Prague. When you’ve already climbed the mountain, sometimes you need to rest.

Sonay Kartal Stuns Navarro at Indian Wells

British No. 2 Sonay Kartal, ranked 54th in the world, defeated No. 20 seed Emma Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2) at Indian Wells. Kartal raced through the first set but needed a medical timeout before Navarro leveled in the second. Serving for the match at 5-4 in the third, Kartal was broken but “refused to go down without a fight,” saved a match point, broke back, and “dropped just two points in the tie-break.” That’s how you close.

Iran’s World Cup Participation in Serious Doubt

Saturday marks 100 days from what should be the start of Iran’s World Cup fixture against New Zealand in Inglewood, near Los Angeles. As the United States bombs Iran and Iran bombs a range of countries including three that have also qualified, “it seems all but impossible that they can take part in the tournament.” Were Iran to pull out or be expelled, they would become the first qualified nation since India and France in 1950 not to take up their place. The World Cup “already feels damaged” a hundred days from the first game.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Calls Out Mourinho

Former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink recounted his experiences with racism at Atlético Madrid and addressed recent incidents after Vinícius Júnior accused Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him in Real Madrid’s Champions League tie with Benfica. Hasselbaink questioned José Mourinho’s position: “Mourinho has black players at Benfica. How the hell must they feel?” Four Premier League players were racially abused on social media across a single weekend, prompting police investigations. Hasselbaink noted “the sad thing” is that “the cycle of racism feels endless.”

Canadian sports delivered gutsy performances, difficult decisions, and one veteran choosing loyalty over glory.

Blake Coleman Stays to Lead Flames Through Rebuild

Blake Coleman is the only one left of Calgary’s five alternate captains after Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, and Nazem Kadri were traded and Jonathan Huberdeau’s season ended with surgery. The 34-year-old winger was the “odds-on favourite to be sent to a contender” but told GM Craig Conroy he’d made peace with whatever decision was best for the organization. Coleman admitted “half the city already said goodbye to me.” He gave himself “about an hour or two” to process staying before having a goal and assist Saturday against Carolina. “It’s a leadership role, helping this team grow and get better,” Coleman said. With one year left on his deal, he’ll “show up, work, lead, teach, compete” until someone else is ready to carry the standard. That’s leadership.

Canadiens Escape California with Improbable Win

Montreal won 4-3 over Los Angeles despite being “outshot 16-1” in the first period and taking three penalties. Coach Martin St. Louis was brutally honest: “Los Angeles was the better team on the ice” and the Canadiens “didn’t deserve to beat the Kings.” Juraj Slafkovsky scored twice including the setup for Nick Suzuki’s game-winner, becoming “the first Montreal Canadien in history to record three consecutive 50-point seasons before his 22nd birthday.” The win vaulted Montreal back into a top-three position in the Atlantic Division after dropping “three of four points on the table in San Jose and Anaheim” earlier in the trip. Sometimes you just steal one.

Maple Leafs Mishandled Ekman-Larsson on Deadline Day

Oliver Ekman-Larsson arrived in Toronto in September with his family “brimming with excitement” for a new season and baby on the way. The 34-year-old felt welcomed “with an open heart” and considered himself a leader. His wife Maja was expecting their second child “any day” when trade deadline arrived, which is why the family decided he would travel to the Olympics alone. Despite being the only Leafs defenceman yet to miss a game this season, Ekman-Larsson was scratched Wednesday and Thursday for “roster management” reasons but ultimately not traded. The situation could have been handled with more care given his family circumstances.

Canada Dominates Colombia in WBC Opener

Canada defeated Colombia 8-2 in their World Baseball Classic opener in San Juan, led by captain Josh Naylor’s defensive play and Owen Caissie’s two-run homer. The Canadians were “so hyped” that they “charged out from the dugout for the first pitch before being cued and had to be pulled back.” Bo Naylor threw out two baserunners, ending consecutive innings with outs at second base. Michael Soroka allowed one run over three innings, touching 97.2 mph on his final fastballs. The win gave Canada “firm control of their fate” heading into Sunday’s clash with Panama.

Max Scherzer Looks Sharp in Blue Jays Spring Debut

Max Scherzer made his 2026 Grapefruit League debut Saturday, touching 96 mph in his first inning of action since pitching Game 7 of the 2025 World Series. The 41-year-old had told manager John Schneider and pitching coach Pete Walker beforehand that he doesn’t feel the need to throw hard early in spring and would ramp up gradually, so they were surprised to see him “come out quite that hot.” Schneider said Scherzer “looked like him, just in control of what he was doing.” The legend is rounding into form.

💪 Hustle & Heart Highlight

Blake Coleman had every reason to leave Calgary. Two Stanley Cups on his resume. Plenty of gas left in the tank. A chance to chase another ring with a contender.

Instead, he stayed.

“Half the city already said goodbye to me,” he said with a tired smile.

But Coleman told GM Craig Conroy he’d made peace with whatever decision was best for the organization. When the Flames decided they needed him to help build the next chapter, he gave himself about an hour to process it, then went out and had a goal and assist against Carolina.

“It’s a leadership role, helping this team grow and get better,” Coleman said.

He didn’t ask to be the last man standing after Calgary traded away Andersson, Weegar, and Kadri. But he’s standing anyway. He’ll show up. He’ll work. He’ll lead. He’ll teach. He’ll compete. He’ll keep the standard alive until someone else is ready to carry it.

That’s what we honor here. Not the championships. Not the glory. The willingness to stay when leaving would be easier. The choice to build when you could just as easily take.

Blake Coleman chose Calgary. And Calgary is lucky to have him.

📅 What to Watch Today
