After a long hiatus from writing, I return with heartfelt apologies to my dedicated readers. Today, I want to discuss something special that caught my attention back in June—the Toronto Blue Jays. Though I refrained from publishing my rough draft predicting their World Series triumph, the time has come to acknowledge the true potential of this team.
As an ardent baseball fan, I’ve witnessed numerous clubhouses and the camaraderie among teammates. However, the bond and genuine smiles emanating from the Blue Jays stood out to me in a unique way. Admittedly, good looks and smiles alone don’t bring talent or luck, but even a casual observer with baseball knowledge can recognize the offensive firepower possessed by the Jays. Admittedly, their starting pitching left something to be desired, but with the addition of David Price, the tide turned swiftly.
While the Jays didn’t start the season in first place, they remained within striking distance of the Yankees. They resembled a cat, patiently waiting for the mouse to emerge from its hole—and that’s precisely what happened. In late July, the Yankees faltered, and Toronto seized the opportunity, grasping the baton and sprinting ahead.
The Jays’ 13-5 record against the Yankees, ultimately clinching the American East division, was a sight to behold. Each game, leading up to the division title, brimmed with excitement. Whenever they trailed, their bats ignited, and a relentless comeback ensued.
As someone born and raised in Montreal, I share a sentimental attachment to our beloved Expos. The decline and eventual demise of the franchise fifteen years ago saddened me deeply. It’s disheartening to see how many individuals here turned their backs on the game entirely. Furthermore, the inexplicable disdain that many Montreal residents harbor toward Toronto franchises perplexes me. It reflects poorly on our sportsmanship and showcases immaturity. Where has our sense of patriotism gone? As I wrote in a previous article, when it comes to patriotism, few can match the Americans.
Currently, the Jays find themselves down 2-0 to the formidable Kansas City Royals in the American League finals. However, as a proud Canadian, I remain a staunch supporter, urging all of us to don our rally hats and hope for a remarkable comeback. Go Jays go!
Lastly, as a bonus for my readers, I offer a free sports pick for Tuesday’s action: the St. Louis Blues at +125.
Stay tuned for more baseball analysis and insights as the season progresses.
